Agree. But since this is a recurring topic, you can post another list in six months. Personally, I'm not very much a fan of lists or rankings, and mine can be different tomorrow, but I'll play the game and give it a try (one album per band, in no particular order and counting beyond 3 becomes difficult for me...): Yes - Gates of Delirium King Crimson - Radical Action to Unseat the Hold of the Monkey Mind Focus - 3 Ange - Guet-apens ELP - Brain Salad Surgery Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear Grobschnitt - Solar Music Live Pink Floyd - Animals Pallas - The Wedge (including the Knightmoves tracks) Banco del mutuo soccorso - Io sono nato libero Rush - Moving Pictures Frank Zappa - Civilization Phaze III Saga - Heads or Tales (or any other of their first 5 albums) ... To Narrow Prog down to just ten albums is difficult, but here goes, no order. Beatles - Sgt. Peppers... *(I'm not sure this really counts as prog) Genesis - Selling England by the Pound Genesis - Nursery Cryme Genesis - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King Pink Floyd - Animals Pink Floyd - The Wall Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon Skin Alley - Skin Alley *(This band really needs more attention, some of the best jazz fusion I've ever heard) Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground *(Really Pushing The Definition of prog) |

Stashed away on my computer I have a list of prog albums for beginners(intro to prog). That is only six albums so I'll just add a few after that.
Pink Floyd-Wish you were here (I suspect most already own Dark side of the moon;if not then go get it asap). Emerson, Lake and Palmer(ELP)- Brain salad surgery King Crimson- In the court of the Crimson King Genesis- Selling England by the Pound Yes-Close to the Edge Jethro Tull-Thick as a Brick Ozric Tentacles - Jurassic Shift Camel - Snowgoose Marillion - Misplaced Childhood (although clutching at straws is probably my personal favorite by them) Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase Another ten that are just bubbling under (some could have made the top ten but I didn't want to repeat bands): Genesis - A Trick of the Tail Yes - Relayer Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow Marillion - Clutching at Straws ELP - Same King Crimson - Larks Tongues in Aspic Gentle Giant - Octopus Rush - Hemispheres Rush - Permanent Waves Alan Parsons Project - Irobot This list (or lists) is not perfect and I'm sure I'm leaving out some that I might think of and even some that are better than some of the ones listed here. If I were to do this tomorrow the list could be different although many(if not most) would still be on here.

Yes - Gates of Delirium
Unless it's some kind of bootleg there's no Yes album with that title.

It reminds me of when people sometimes say Echoes is one of their favorite PF albums.

I'll do a mixed list. My main area of expertise is prog metal but I'll try to include albums from various sub-genres and time periods.
In no particular order: 1-) Genesis - Foxtrot 2-) Yes - Close to the Edge 3-) Beyond Twilight - For the Love of Art and the Making 4-) Marillion - Misplaced Childhood 5-) Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior 6-) Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite 7-) Dream Theater - Awake 8-) Gryphon - Red Queen to the Gryphon Three 9-) Wobbler - Rites at Dawn 10-) IQ - Dark Matter Sorry Saga & VDGG. I love you, but... |

Owie... Did I take the liberty there to re-baptise an album? Yes, I did... It actually is a better title, isn't it? Edit: And I hereby declare that Echoes is indeed one of PF's better albums... Edited by suitkees - August 12 2021 at 15:23 |

40 minutes of the quality of Echoes would have competed for my number 1 spot with very good chances. The same thought experiment with Gates of Delirium would have brought it close to top 10 if probably just not into it. Top 20 for sure.

Personally, it doesn't really bother me that much but someone brand new to prog might get confused when trying to find these albums.

Top 10... I don't know. I'll just throw some of the ones that come to my mind first, though I might miss some others.
Wish you were Here and Animals from Pink Floyd. CttE and Fragile from Yes. Myths and Legends of King Arthur (some combination of the original and the new re-recording) and 6 Wives from Rick Wakeman. Ommadawn from Mike Oldfield (and perhaps also Tubular Bells and Hergest Ridge). Hamburger Concerto from Focus. Almost Selling England by the Pound (if it weren't for Battle of Epping Forest). IV from Led Zeppelin. The Division Bell from Pink Floyd. Hybris from Anglagard. Secret of the Runes from Therion. Mother Earth from Within Temptation. Reflections from Apocalyptica. Immaginaerum from Night Wish. Train of Thought from Dream Theater (and disc one from 6 degrees of inner turbulence). The Whirlwind from Transatlantic. The Raven from Steven Wilson. |

^^ Don't worry, Mike, they'll find it... (and can then use their newly acquired knowledge to correct me).
