Some Prog Folk bands have been as ephemeral as the proverbial Dragonfly, but the Strawbs have been Ringing Down the Years now for well over half a century with an impressive discography that's positively Bursting at the Seams with 25 albums. The Strawbs debut album - recorded in 1967 - which they were proud to call All Our Own Work, featured the Hero and Heroine of Prog Folk: Dave Cousins and Sandy Denny. Dave Cousins has been the driving force behind the Strawbs throughout their long career and Sandy Denny is of course best-known now for her association with Fairport Convention, where her haunting refrains still conjure up the Ghosts of halcyon days gone by, unlike the Grave New World we live in now. The Strawbs diverse albums are much more than Just a Collection of Antiques and Curios though. They released a whole string of classic albums in the early 1970's to meet various record company Deadlines. The Strawbs folky songs From the Witchwood range anywhere from Folk Rock to Baroque & Roll with some of their Deep Cuts being a full-on Prognostic experience. Their latest album was released earlier this year, but who knows if that will be their final Settlement. Let's hope not. Don't Say Goodbye to the Strawbs just yet, as there may be still more to come.

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

I don't know their full story, not their full discography, but, in my opinion, there really wasn't a bad album released during the first half of the 70s--and Dave Cousins' voice has aged well--different, but well.
1. My favorite, by far, is Ghosts, the only Strawbs record that earns five stars from me. 2. Hero and Heroine 3. Grave New World 4. Songs from the Witchwood 5. Deadlines 6. Dragonfly 7. Bursting at the Seams |

1. Hero & Heroine
2. Ghosts 3. Grave New World 4. From the Witchwood 5. Bursting at the Seams 6. The Ferryman's Curse 7. Dragonfly (Antiques & Curios might get a place, but I haven't heard it completely, and what I've heard, the live sound quality is not very good.)

Steve and I are on the same page...exactly. 2) Ghosts 3) Grave New World 4) Witchwood 5) Antiques And Curios 6) Dragonfly 7) Strawbs (s/t debut) I could substitute Bursting At The Seams for either Strawbs or Dragonfly.

I'm only properly familiar with four Strawbs albums, but the one that floats my boat the most is From the Witchwood, so my selection would be:
1. From the Witchwood 2. Hero and Heroine 3. Grave New World 4. Ghosts |

To my ears The Strawbs were never very good at this rock-thing.
This somewhat ruins quite a few of their albums for me. I always enjoy a
handful - or at least a trio of songs on all their "classics". But
there's too much half assed singalong pubrock (post 1970/1971), with Status Quo-like
riffs in the mix. I have an extremely low tolerance for
that. The end of the otherwise stunning opener Autumn on Hero
and Heroine seriously annoys me so much I've made my own five
minute-edit of it. But in their aqoustic folk/psych mode it's all quite
lovely - and I love all their early easternflavored excursions. I've
never checked out any of their post-70's albums.
1 From the Witchwood (1971) 2 Just a Collection of Antiques and Curios (1970) 3 All Our Own Work (1967/1973) 4 Dragonfly (1970) 5 Strawbs (1969) 6 Bursting at the Seams (1973) 7 Grave New World (1972)
