The second of six decades in the history of Prog-Rock and what a decade it was! I could have easily chosen ten favourite prog albums from each year during the classic 1970's era, but I somehow managed to narrow it down to just one choice, which could have been a totally different selection on a different day. If you want to choose more than one album for each year, then that's fine too. Let's Rock!
1970: Bachdenkel - Lemmings 1971: Spring - Spring 1972: Khan - Space Shanty 1973: Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning 1974: Refugee - Refugee 1975: Rick Wakeman - The Myths & Legends of King Arthur & the Knights of the Round Table 1976: Camel - Moonmadness 1977: England - Garden Shed 1978: Richard Wright - Wet Dream 1979: Tony Banks - A Curious Feeling

I tried, but I can't do it. It's impossible to narrow it down to a favorite, especially between the years 70-74.

I think what we really need is everyone's Top 10 list of prog albums year by year, from 1967 thru' to 2020, then I can assign points to your top album choices as per usual. I've quickly realised it's really hard to narrow it down to just one favourite album for each year, so in the words of Orange Juice, maybe I should just "Rip It Up and Start Again".

Impossible to compile really seeing as many classic prog albums were released in the first half of the decade.

OK, let's give it a try.
70 - Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant. 71 - Fragile - Yes. 72 - Close to the Edge - Yes. 73 - 6 Wives of Henry the VIII - Rick Wakeman. 74 - Hamburger Concerto - Focus. 75 - Wish you were Here - Pink Floyd. 76 - Tales of Mystery and Imagination - The Alan Parsons Project. 77 - Animals - Pink Floyd. And I don't really know how to go for the last two years. I guess I might go with The Wall for 79, but I don't really remember an option for 78... I guess Incantations from Mike Oldfield or Equinox from Jean Michel Jarre. |

It's not so bad. I am generally not one to accept limiting to one album, or comply strictly with the demands, but it's not like this is anything to be cast in stone (just another PP thread), so I went ahead and actually found it relatively easy, precisely because I didn't give a hoot.

I found it an almost impossible task too (along with many others here), so I'm going to completely redo this thread, and then we can name our ten favourite prog albums from each individual year, instead of each decade - although I might struggle to name ten favourite prog albums for each year when we get well beyond the classic 1970's era.
