Jokes aside, the "fair use" is legally still very ill-defined (case law is also very country dependent), but I agree with you that in principle we probably don't have much to worry (as long as lyrics are also freely available elsewhere, and we can delete them easily on demand). And I don't mind going ahead with this (i.e. giving the original lyrics at the start of each RwC-thread), unless/until admins tell us to act differently.

It's just that sometimes my professional experience regarding copyright/authors rights makes me very aware when it comes into play... But don't worry, I sleep well, especially now I can send all the legal claims to you!

Actually, on second thought, reproducing the original lyrics at the start of a new Rewriting-Classics-thread is not a good idea: it could be considered as an infringement of copyright (well, it actually is: we are reproducing lyrics!).

I guess most of the copyright holders themselves wouldn't have much of a problem with what we're doing, but the problem is mostly the copyright managers, and they see money in everything, even when it's not there... So, I guess, before admins interfere (or give us the green light), it is better not to reproduce the original lyrics at the start of each # but rather to link to a page where the lyrics are available (and thus the eventual copyright infringement is on their account and not ours/PA's...).

The first part - putting the original lyrics in the OP - is easy, but the second part seems to be a bit unfeasible, at least for me: I'm not on PA 24 hours a day - Sex, Sleep, Eat, Drink, Dream... take time too (and cycling, hiking, talking to the cat, visiting friends, working, annoying students, etc, etc...), so there will be moments (sometimes even days) that I won't be available to log in and strike out lines...

And, as soon as it starts to look like homework, I will be much less inclined to participate, but if there are some brilliant ideas, let's hear them!

Really, how it works now is fine for me. Posting the original lyrics in the OP seems a good thing. However, formalizing this more than that feels to me like it's going against the spirit of a "Just for fun" thread. My two cents...

^ It's an idea. And I'm not necessarily against it, but I think we should not formalize all this too much: it's not "work", it's "fun", and I'm afraid that the more you formalize things the less fun they will be.

There are songs that are easier than others (better known, simple lyrics, clear articulation...) and sometimes we make mistakes, as I did in Come Sail Away. JD retook/corrected me and relaunched where we should be.

Now, with My Sharona, I have the impression we lost track too (but maybe it's just me...), so I tried to relaunch it now. Please tell me if I'm wrong, Heart of the Matter, and I will correct my message!

We had some glitches earlier on, but they were picked up easily and we got to the end of all songs (although I have a doubt regarding Walk This Way...). Sometimes, the poetic liberty of one might confuse the other, but to me this is all part of the fun. Some songs attract more participants than others, some become a bit laborious, some are more difficult, sometimes the singing has a different articulation than the lyrics in writing... Then again: I'm afraid that when we formalize more, it will loose its fun aspect. But these are just my thoughts and I don't mind being contradicted.

^ "Might" is the good word. It would also depend what reference everyone is using (lyrics site, booklet/LP-sleeve, etc.). And sometimes we cut one line in two... Let's not formalize all this too much, it's just for fun!

It would be good though if every OP that starts a # signals the end of it (which has always been done up till now...), which is also a good sign to start a new one (which is open anyone who wants).
