Cristi: Your third video on Page 5 doesn't work for me, and no one put up an alternative. Can you advise on name and track title? I know you've already made your selection, but I do like to be a "completist," and listen to everything, if it's not too much trouble. Or, if someone else can advise that also can see it? Thanks!

And now! Ta-da! The rest of my first listen thoughts up to date, with the exception of the one Cristi posted that I can't access, will handle that when it's in. Also several additions.
Cristi: Agent
Fresco “Dark Water” Thought this was going
to be more straight ahead hard-edged from the start, but it’s not and I just
LOVE the vocalist. This time a male for
sure 😉 , sings with a
lovely tune and great abandon, which I always find attractive in a singer. Lots of great changes musically, pace and
rhythm changes abound. The Cure “The Same Deep Water As
You” Washy guitars and drums, then keyboards as the intro advances. Robert Smith’s anguished vocals really suit this
style, another one with plenty of passion in the vocals. Echo-y, watery guitar effects and symphonic
style keys add to the drowning feeling in this piece. The Anders: Portsmouth Sinfonia “Blue Danube Waltz”
Oh, fun, a wonky version of this waltz.
Would also have been quite fun in the April Fool’s poll. I was completely expecting a different
arrangement and performance! Scott: Saigon
Kick “Water” Straight-ahead rock with a
persistent repetition electric guitar straight through, kind of a drone effect,
but more pointed. Another song of
drowning, which swirls down halfway in with watery sounds, vocal and drums
alone for a short time, then, the wasp-guitar returns. Near the end, joined by a female vocalist and
a choir, interesting deviation that was completely unexpected. Dio “Walk On Water” Definitely as expected
from Dio, hard rock and metallic vocal, driving beat and guitar pyrotechnics. Joan Jett “Watersign” Rock ballad from Joan
Jett here, slow and steady with hard rock lead guitar. Good for a quieter song during a set of hard
rocking music. Nick_h_nz: Jane’s Addiction “Up the Beach” Very familiar
with this act, we were the bus company of choice in the US for all of the
Lollapalooza tours from the start. That
being said, can’t vote for it, but this band was wonderfully exuberant live and
this is a very artful piece by them. dr wu23: Jackson Browne “Rock Me on the Water” This was a huge smash song and record in it’s
time, so can’t vote for it, but I can attest it was often on my turntable back
then. Extra kudos to JB for giving David
Lindley such a great job for so many years, too. A Crimson Mellotron: Adele “Water Under the Bridge” That video didn’t work for me, used the studio release from YT at 4:01 mins in length. This is a strong pop singer, a little bit of a baby-ish affectation to her voice (yes, I heard of her, but haven’t heard this one), who does that sort of chopping off of her vocals that so many do. Well produced, just not my style of music in the modern era. Elton John: Madman Across the Water” An absolute favourite EJ song of mine, progressive in feel and evocative, would think of it as a contender if I didn’t know it (that’s my usual way in these polls). Welcome to the polls, btw. Progishness: Also welcome to the polls. Eton College Musical Society “Eton Boating Song” Sort of a dance hall feel to this, with full orchestra, no doubt it is a real school song for the boating team at Eton, I would imagine. I actually considered using something by the Portsmouth Sinfonia for the April Fool's poll, but I wanted to submit one song only. The album was produced by Brian Eno (!). He also plays clarinet on it (as it was an instrument he could not play). Portsmouth Sinfonia also appear on the song "Put a Straw Under Baby" from Eno's second solo album Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). OK now I'm really caught up. I'd missed Lorenzo's choice and also Cristi's as posted just above.
Lorenzo: The Gang “Dopo
La Pioggia” Effected guitar repeats a
line, then a male vocalist sings, drums join in. It is Springsteen-ish, as far
as the vocals go, to my ear. A keyboard solo with kind of a “whang-y” tone to
it, during a bridge, it then stays for a bit during the next verse. Keyboards come back and continue with
shimmery guitar. Impassioned lead guitar
near the end. I enjoy this, there is a darkness to it, yet
a sense of triumph. Cristi: Steve Lukather “Tears of My Own Shame” Yeah, that
live one is the only one I could find, also.
If the sound quality were better, the video itself wouldn’t bother me, I
actually prefer to listen to the song, rather than watch a video, although some
are really well done and interesting (the one of Raff’s that had the mystical
creatures by the sea, for instance).
This is a very straight-ahead Hendrix-y/Clapton-y blues type song, expertly played (even with the lousy sound, that does come through).

1) Tindersticks - Whisky And Water / Haunting and wonderful. 2) PJ Harvey - The River / Haunting and wonderful. 3) Fluturi Pe Asfalt - Munti Sub Mari / Very nice post/math rock type thing. I didn't like the singer, but guitar textures, 5/4 meter and the whole atmosphere were excellent. Honourable mentions to Mice Parade and Hot Tuna, and extra special super honourable mention to Portsmouth Sinfonia.

This might be the first interactive poll where I’ve liked almost every single nomination. Only the Eton Boating Song was a miss for me.
There were several I might have voted for if I did not already know them, so removing them from contention did definitely make thing easier - if still not exactly easy. In the end, the one nomination I knew immediately was going to be one of my three picks was Radiopuhelimet. There’s something really neat about music from the Finns. I have a lot of bands and artists from Finland in my collection, and it is definitely one of my favourite countries to listen to music from. Mice Parade was almost as automatic, but did require a little more thought. And finally, after a lot of thought, my final vote went to Timdersticks. Honourable mentions to The Gang and Susan McKeown from those I didn’t know; and to Handel and PJ Harvey from those I did know. Great topic. Great nominations. Great listening. Great fun. Thank you all. |

I, too, had a terrible time deciding, especially with some who were similar to each other, ie two minor key singers, drifty-dreamy pieces and/or instrumentals that had a similar feel to me. That being said, here goes.
1. Nick_h_nz: This one, I purchased, I loved it so much. The first choice was easy for me. Then it gets a lot more difficult. Ariana Tikao & Al Fraser “Nau Mai e Kā
Hua” Sounds very interesting to
me….let’s go take a gander over at BC. I
decided to listen to the title track, which begins with some sort of flute-ish
sounds? The woman’s voice is absolutely
spine-tinglingly beautiful. I think I
will add this to my “to listen to,” emails that I send myself. Just stunning and an absolute contender. Your other choice would also have been in my "re-listen after first listen" category. 2. Logan: This one warred like heck with my #3 choice, just because they have a similar feel, or way I would group artist "types," anyway. PJ Harvey “The River” Actually, I’m not very familiar with her
material, although I have many friends who are fast and faithful fans. So let’s give it a listen. A whispery vocal with haunting piano notes,
quiet percussion, a feeling of foreboding here.
I like the atmosphere here, very dark in feel. Trumpet is an excellent
choice to add to this, to create a cold-feeling cityscape rearing up behind the
river. Washy, distorted guitars just
add to the dense, drowning feeling. Also, I enjoyed all of your choices enough to put them into the "re-listen," category, also. 3. Mike: As mentioned, he and PJ got into an argument in my mind here. She won me over by being a bit more haunted. Patrick Watson “Here Comes the River”
Beautiful voiced singer/songwriter type, with muted piano. Just a slight echo effect on his voice, this
is very subtle, as there is a slow orchestral swell, that continues to build
and then abates to go back to just voice and piano for a moment. Very moving piece, I can see why it has given
you such solace of late. This is one I
too, will return to, and want to hear more from him. Honourable Mentions (these all got relistens, just didn't quite make it into the top 3, although George's fought with #2 and #3): George: Gustavo Santaolalla “Iguazu” Obviously, this is a style I always love, the other 3 just hit me more strongly this time and on a repeat listen. Cristi: Fluturi Pe Asfalt “Munti Sub Mari” Also enjoyed all of yours this time, but those moody things are going to win for me over heavy, any day. Agent Fresco would have had a bigger fight with the Top 3. Lewian: Mice Parade “Waterslide” Also, as you probably know by now, I am getting more of an appreciation for this kind of music, but this one had to contend with quite a few which were in a style of which I'm more passionate. Raff: The Stranglers “Toiler on the Sea” (only because I know Blind Faith too well) Tancos: Michael Chapdelaine “Ran Dance” I actually purchased this one, too. Thank you! suitkees: Moon Ate The Dark “She / Swimming” Would absolutely have been in the relisten and probably get in an argument for inclusion near the top category. This one was definitely difficult and if you didn't get mentioned here, it's only because you didn't fit easily into these kinds of categories that I mention after the fact.
