Well, I love 'em both. (Should that be my big Prog Secret??) There is some compatibility: According to Rush's website, they were "Very Inspired" by VDGG (among some other bands--mostly with their late 70's output). Particularly, I've heard that their creation of Cygnus X-1 was inspired by Pioneers Over C, though I don't remember where I read this. In any case, the two tracks are similar in concept.

Let's see what I can say to get kicked from the site... (1) I don't know whether I had heard any Rush before I joined the site in 2015. Chances are I had, but it hadn't left any impression on me. So I really didn't know how they sound when I saw everyone discussing them here. And, even worse: (2) I like Under Wraps more than the first three Jethro Tull albums. As a massive Art Zoyd fan I actually find more embarrassing that I hadn't heard any Univers Zero before joining the site, but I'm pretty sure I'm not alone with that (OK massive Art Zoyd fans are few and far between but at least the world is full of people who don't know Univers Zero ).

My first Frank Zappa album was Baby Snakes, which I bought for Titties & Beer. |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

The first time I heard "Moya" on vinyl from "Godspeed You! Black Emperor" on vinyl, I played it at 33 1/3 rpm and it was supposed to be played at 45 rpm. Going even further, it wasn't the first time I heard it, and I still didn't realize it. Yet, it still sounded pretty great. (Just in case anyone picks that up on vinyl, be warned that side A is 45 rpm and side B is 33 1/3 rpm just to make it even more interesting....I love finding those little vinyl surprises like that.)

My "embarrassing prog secret" is that I'm not a big fan of Yes (except for Fragile and CTTE). But strangely enough, I'm a HUGE fan of The Flower Kings and symphonic prog in general.
Am I normal?

I suppose it's not too embarrassing that some proggers don't like Yes as it seems to be the case in several of the comments here. In my early prog days, I didn't like Yes that much either, but I stayed determined to "get it" since they were so highly regarded in prog circles. And I did get it. They have become one of my favorite all-time bands. It's not easy music to get into and requires a lot of commitment to truly "get it" because it is quite complex.
So, I guess it's normal to not like Yes but to love prog. I thought I was abnormal too, but have since seen the light. The payoff for the time I put into it all was worth it.

I remember a video interview of Geddy mentioning VdGG as a band he listens to and drew some musical inspiration from, there is no reason why they would not be influenced by VdGG. "We" think we know so much about these bands and what they were doing and listening to back in the day...

I was that way with Genesis. Listened to Selling England by the Pound and didn't get it at all. And then after a few tries every few years, one day it suddenly clicked, and I became a massive fan of the Gabriel-era.
A few months ago I had a sudden desire to listen to his music and dived in, especially the Dionne albums. I especially feel that way about Michel Legrand's work, especially his French musicals; or Francoise Hardy's 60s albums; they're like time machines to a different era.
Time to add the Carpenters to PA

I enjoy both Yes and The Flower Kings, and I do not understand when the latter gets the regressive rock flak! |
