70, 71, and 73 are the only years all of the big six released music. Therefore, 69, 70, 72 and 74 should not be included?

So with that mentioned... 1971.

Not a huge fan of Obscured By Clouds but the other four smash every other year !

I'll give 71 another vote. I feel it's the most colorful year in question for these 6 bands. All of them released an album (or 2 in Yes' case) and all of these albums either sit among my favorite from each band or (in the case of Floyd) include at least one undeniable genre defining classic. 72 and 73 are of course artistic peaks in their own right, but I feel personally 71 sees each of these bands on an equal playing field, a concentration of pure potential energy the fruits of which had to be spread out over the next three years.
Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

It's slightly more challenging when you lay out what came out each year...

...But 1972 gets it, like almost always.

Arguably the 1971-73 period was prog's halcyon days, when it was properly maturing, and before it started getting a bit overblown, pompous, and self-indulgent.

Discuss.

That would have been me back in September 2019 when none of those abbreviations meant anything to me either. Smile

A lot of prog haters would argue prog was always overblown and self indulgent, so it's hard to know where to draw that line. I usually seen it drawn at TFTO and TLLDOB, one of which does sit in the 71-73 period. But I think I agree for the most part. In these early years prog was still getting its bearings and discovering all it could do. Directly afterwards it started discovering more of what it couldn't do (keep Peter Gabriel around, release more than one PF album every two years, keep KC together, keep a consistent lineup in Yes, make a whole album song every JT album, keep making great ELP albums, etc.)
Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

The advances in technology played a part too - the prog bands were going into the studio with the attitude 'we've got all this wonderful latest equipment, so let's exploit it and see what we can get it to do'.  Advances in the studios themselves, and recording and production techniques also played a big part in the prog sound.  And this was all in the analogue era!
