I don't find these albums cover you mention bad, they never bothered me in any way. Confused

All down to personal taste. Some folk hate the cover to And then there were three, I think it's beautiful.

Bless your heart, you remembered!!

I once played in a Spinal Tap tribute/satire band, sort of a Mobius strip of bad....It was an amazing experience!

The ultimate cover selected was, of course, the "black" cover....Spinal Tap confronted Metallica over their appropriation of the concept!!

I concur with regard to Yes GFTO, Rush Presto/Hemispheres,

Then there's..

Duke - Genesis
Nursery Cryme - Genesis
Foxtrot - Genesis
Sabotage - Black Sabbath
PXR5 - Hawkwind
Trilogy - ELP
Queen - A kind of Magic
Fugazi - Marillion (sorry, I think it's awful)

point well madeLOL, but "great" is all IMHO, right? Wink

I really don't understand the deal with male nudity on Hemispheres and GFTOConfused. Both are good covers (better than 2112 , also with male buttocks in the innergatefoldTongue and the kimonos on the back coverEvil Smile), though neither would be in my top 50 artworks.

No major problems with the Whitehead (incl VdGG and Le Orme) artworks either, even with the strange sense of perspectives , but the oddest Whitehead is Pawh Hearts, IMHO.

Duke & Trilogy are indeed poor (though there is a direction in Duke's gatefold art), Sabotage is awful Deadand Fugazi is semi-sordidOuch (but it isn't a good album, let alone great).

.

I've always found H to HE to be Whitehead's strangest, most intriguing piece.

I still see it as a pair of lungs with a pocket watch attached, lol.

This thread sure is interesting, because I personally consider Foxtrot to have an exemplary prog rock artwork!

I was never bowled over by those early Genesis album covers. I'm not sure why. They were just not to my taste I guess. That said, they are better than Duke, which was just a lazy failed attempt to appear 'modern' and minimalist. IMO.

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

ELP - Tarkus

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head.

The Final Cut - Roger Waters thought he could take total artistic control over the band, even down to designing the cover. [Not to mention putting his own name above 'Pink Floyd'.] Whilst I love the album, aesthetically it more resembled a GCSE art project rather than being up to the standard of some of the Hipgnosis designed sleeves, e.g. DSotM, WYWH, Ummagumma, Animals etc.

The final Flash studio LP, "Out of our Hands," would easily qualify.

I think "Tormato" cover was a disaster  (being a good album musicaly) barely saved by Rick throwing a tomato at it, making sort of conceptual art self-joke out of it.

Other one that makes me cringe:
It's a reissue, but still. The original cover at the size of post stamp complete with arctic landscape, fancy 80s car, Star Wars' stormtrooper,  the Moon and Michelangelo's David above it all Ouch
