They were never on the OGWT from what I know. Or were they?

And of course TOTP in 1978 when Northern Lights charted.

I think Warner happened just a little late for them. Had they been signed on to Warner in 75,they may have gotten bigger without giving up too much on prog.

It probably was the Mike Douglas Show, not Merv. All those white middle aged late afternoon talk show hosts look alike to me. As you can see. LOL  I don't recall them ever being on the OGWT but the BBC loved them and they did a lot of BBC Radio broadcasts even from the earlier days.

Yeah, but their material was not top 10 fare in the mid seventies, imho, so it still would have been hard for them to be any bigger. "Mother Russia" is just not a hummable tune, imho.

oh cool is there any video of the Canadian TV appearance?  As I mentioned before, the local FM station in Ottawa completely embraced Camera Camera at the time and so did a bunch of guys in my dorm, though I suspect they were drawn to Annie for more reasons than her voice!

As a side note only tangentially related, another gay friend and I who are into folk music and the folkier side of prog like Strawbs and Renaissance, love to joke about how if went on a gay cruise, we would want the requisite diva to be Annie or Maddy Prior rather than Cher or whoever is the current gal with chutzpah.  There is a fantastic moment in a Steeleye Span video that we love in which Maddy dances merrily across the stage in a polka dotted dress.  Yeah that's the stuff.

That is true.  Renaissance is a bit of a paradox - accessible but not catchy.  They're somewhat like Gryphon that way, though a lot more accessible and definitely not THAT dense. Gentle Giant is the other extreme - not accessible but somehow infectious in a goofy way. In a sense, Ren come across like the classical music they were trying to re-create in a folk/prog set up.  Classical music of at least the pre-Schoenberg period is fairly easy to listen to but doesn't have the finger-snapping pulse of rock, wasn't intended to. Some of Genesis is like that too - Supper's Ready without the Winston Churchill waterbag portion.

wow she looks pretty good there.  The 3 main members all had quite a makeover compared to their 1970s personae.  I know Annie doesn't alk about this period in the band history...I wonder if she even could watch this or if it would make her cringe.   I still say that commercial success during this period would have made all of these trappings much easier to swallow!

She does laugh these days while posting pics of herself from the 80s. Said once that she preferred the 70s. I agree with you that success would have wiped away these complaints. The Wilson sisters got themselves the same makeover in the 80s but had their biggest success in the 80s. That being said, it was always a mistake to go in a very commercial, synth pop kind of direction. What they needed was the quirkiness of the title track of Camera Camera or Okichi San but mixing it with Fairies or Running Away muddled the picture and then they doubled down on THOSE kind of songs with Timeline.

agree, or maybe if Timeline had had more songs like "Flight".  Tyrant Tula was the song that local radio embraced at the time.  I thought it was also a reasonable direction.  I know we have talked alot about hooks but honestly I listen to a lot of what was big back then and can't find a hook if my life depended on it.

If you look the context of the times, new wave was more about catchy songs than songs with strong hooks. (I'll Stop The World and) And Melt With You is more of what they were aimimg for with some songs on Camera Camera.

interesting Steve.  I have thought of hooks and catchy as the same thing but I guess a hook is by definition catchy but catchy does not mean hook necessarily... well, "Ukraine Ways" came up on my shuffle today and I think it's quite catchy, but doesn't really have a hook

Got my copy of the CD/DVD/Bluray set.  The package is beautiful and the DVD looks great and sounds amazing. The best of the DVDs yet (sadly might be the last, by the looks of it).  Bluray doesn't work on my CD drive so will have to look for an external Bluray drive.  That is, if I can find one.  Funny how quickly the CD format has become like vintage/classic cars.  And yet, it sounds better, by far, than compressed digital formats (where modern cars do actually perform better than the oldies).  Funny are the ways of the music world where we are asked to accept an inferior product as 'contemporary' and told that the best format for listening to music is outdated.

me too!  but I'm in a lot of transitions now so the DVD is 40 miles from where I actually am and Ill get it soon enough.  Now really looking forward to it.  Good work Esa and company!

Yep, this just reinforces my opinion that they should have done Ukraine Ways and Flood At Lyon with the mini orchestra. A missed opportunity.

Not necessarily the best performance of the song (though it's very good for what it is and not flawed in any way as such), but this is exceedingly rare.  Apparently, Renaissance performed three songs - Prologue, Can You Understand and Ashes Are Burning - for a TV program in Luxembourg in 1974. 

This program has never been listed even on the Northern Lights website nor mentioned by the band or any long time fans.   

Somebody uploaded the video of the program with audio removed asking for a king's ransom to get the bootleg (with audio).  Within a week, the video and the userid disappeared from Youtube. 

But somebody else does seem to have got hold of the original audio of the Ashes Are Burning performance (unless it exactly matches another 1974 recording but I am not aware of and it says original audio in the description).

So here it is.

 

I notice that while Annie's arms are joined together (as was her wont throughout the 70s), she's dropped them loose here and they don't get up to the diaphragm during either the big Ashes are burning the way note or the high vocalise.  I wonder what was up with the evolution of the arms and their role in her singing.  If you see Capitol '76/Midnight Special/Sight & Sound '77 (or just any of the photos from the mid-late 70s), the arms come up much higher and also rise further up/tighten for high notes.  And then, in the 80s she stopped keeping them joined together for good.
