It was a really tough call between Opeth and GSYBE, but I decided to go with Opeth since that's one of my two favorites by them (the other being Still Life)
Take me down, to the underground
Won't you take me down, to the underground
Why oh why, there is no light
And if I can't sleep, can you hold my life

GY!BE. I haven't heard the Robert Fripp album and the rest aren't my cup of tea to be honest.

Was hesitating between Liquid Tension Experiment and Godspeed; went with the latter.

The best albums from 1998 I have are probably Mark Hollis' solo album and Permutation by Amon Tobin, then the Godspeed one and In Extremis by Thinking Plague. Excellent albums for sure, but wouldn't maybe have won many other years, so I'm with you on that one.

I was thinking this myself. The fact that I chose Marilyn Manson said as much for me. Because I can’t imagine ever choosing Manson as the winner in any year, but he stood out from this list for me. Was 1998 such a bad year? Well, I turned to my iPod to see what it had to say on the matter, and so long as the albums are tagged correctly (and quite often I have found that the year of release is not tagged accurately), then I actually enjoyed a lot of music from 1998. It simply wasn’t very prog-oriented (though there are a couple of prog releases in there).

I’ve kept only Marilyn Manson from this poll in my list, as it was the point of reference. And while it was what I voted for in this poll, it would come near the very bottom of the list of albums on my iPod. Then again, most people on this forum might not find a lot to like in my list. 🤷🏻‍♂️

DEATH on this one, but only because you've omitted Gorguts OBSCURA! My 1998 top pick.

I use they/them pronouns (feel free to ask me about this!)

Chroma Key's "Dead Air For Radios" is a special album and my pick. Bruford Levin Upper Extremities self titled debut would be my second choice.

I'm just exploring Arena's discography and The Visitor is absolutely wonderful.

A bit of a wasteland of a year for me, I only have LTE of those and only 15 albums in total. My highlights would be:-

Thinking Plague - In Extremis
Present - Certitudes
Tortoise - TNT
