The Top 3 are a big surprise to me. I was expecting In the Court of the Crimson King to win this poll easily, as it's consistently rated as being one of the best debut prog albums of all time. I've never been a fan of the Larks' Tongues in Aspic album , although I know it has a big following here.

The top three aren’t surprising for me, and I expected Red to be number one, but there’s not much in it. What does surprise me is how far behind Larks is. I thought those three would all be quite close, and far ahead of the rest.

I've been deservedly shot down in flames for airing my highly subjective ignorant views on King Crimson's later albums. After all, I'm hardly a world authority on King Crimson when I've admittedly only listened to each of their albums once only, so why should anyone take any notice of what I think. That will be my Epitaph:- Here lies Psychedelic Paul who knows next to nothing about King Crimson. ![]() 1. Red (133 points) 2. In the Court of the Crimson King (119 points) 3. Larks' Tongues in Aspic (107 points) 4. Lizard (80 points) 5. In the Wake of Poseidon (43 points) 6. Starless & Bible Black (40 points) 7. Discipline (36 points) 8. Islands (26 points) 9. While I recognise that Paul, as he tends to do, was partially joking, it still grates. I abhor the attitude that, as you state, so many have about way too many artists out there. Given how openminded and mind expanding prog originally was (and still is), it constantly amazes me how closed-minded and intransigent some fans are. It also irks me when someone says something along the lines of “I listen to anything except that rap crap” to try and proclaim that they are open-minded. I listen to and love music, and don’t really care about the genre or era. There is good music from all eras, and across all genres. I am never going to claim that I love country music (for example), but conversely I’ll never claim to hate it. I’ve yet to find a genre that I don’t like at least something from. Heck, I enjoyed a grindcore album a couple of days ago - which is something I wasn’t ever sure I’d do. My point, badly made, is that one should never write off entire genres, nor eras. Just because you haven’t heard something yet that you enjoy, doesn’t mean you never will. And even if you never do, that doesn’t mean others don’t enjoy it. There’s no point pissing on someone else’s parade. So yeah, Paul, as much as I usually enjoy your posts (and surprisingly often agree with them), it’s not a nice thing to do, to tell someone that they’re not missing much. Rather, let them listen and decide for themselves that they hadn’t missed much. Or, maybe - just maybe - they might like it. 🤷🏻♂️ |
