Very good albums.

I have heard all the later studio albums at least once but no longer have the last two(TCOL and tPtB). I recently ordered thrak which I never had before and played it once so far(I liked it quite a bit but not as much as discipline although maybe better than Beat and TOOPP). I will eventually get the last two as well as live stuff(I only ever had USA a long time ago). With so much prog out there it's easy to get sidetracked with lesser known bands(and newer bands which are often the same thing).

I should have guessed you're a big King Crimson fan just from your username alone. As for me, I loved the first two albums they did with Greg Lake, but after he left the band, I no longer had The Power to Believe in King Crimson and his court. Confused

Well that's nonsense, the later albums are good to great, people prefer the earlier ones, it doen't discount the later ones. I'd take The Power To Believe ahead of any Yes in the last two decades.

I don't dislike King Crimson as a whole. I like five of their early albums. After all, I wouldn't have posted this thread and listed my Top 7 King Crimson albums if I really disliked the band totally. Smile

That's absolutely fine, in just the same way as I'd prefer to listen to the Yes: Heaven & Earth album instead of any King Crimson album after 1970. Smile

^ That's true. I may have liked King Crimson a lot more if they hadn't been so unpredictable with each album release. Ideally, I would've liked each album to be a consistent variation on their superb debut album, but then again, they wouldn't have been Robert Fripp's King Crimson if that had been the case. Smile
 
 
I think the results of the Van der Graaf Generator poll are going to prove a revelation to me too, especially considering that the much-loved Pawn Hearts album didn't even feature in my Top 7. I have a feeling Pawn Hearts is going to be rated the top VDGG album when all the votes have been counted. Smile

Paul, how does one know if they are not missing much if they haven't heard their later albums.  This is the attitude too many people have about way too many artists out there, so they think the only good music was released in the 70's.  This is so incorrect.  I understand that you don't like them, but you have no right to pass judgement on what other people might like or dislike.  I happen to think Thrak is perfect.  I know not many people agree, but in my world, it's perfect, and I listen to it knowing that only a select few love it as much as I do.  That's okay.  But I don't go around saying that you have to love it because I love it or vice-versa.  To me, King Crimson is the epitome of progressive music, because their music has always progressed and constantly been the spark that ignited so many different future styles.

I agree with Ian.  The Power to Believe is close to perfect for me (not as perfect as Thrak though LOL).  I would take it over many of Yes' later albums (though I think "The Ladder" would come close).  I'm a big fan of KC though and recognize that much of progressive music is out there because of them.  They are truly one of the bands that pave the way for Progressive music and have managed to remain so even now, while many others have given in to commercial pressure.  But, then that is my opinion.  You're free to have yours too, but don't tell others to base their opinions on your opinion when they haven't even had a chance to hear it yet.

While I recognise that Paul, as he tends to do, was partially joking, it still grates. I abhor the attitude that, as you state, so many have about way too many artists out there. Given how openminded and mind expanding prog originally was (and still is), it constantly amazes me how closed-minded and intransigent some fans are. It also irks me when someone says something along the lines of “I listen to anything except that rap crap” to try and proclaim that they are open-minded.

I listen to and love music, and don’t really care about the genre or era. There is good music from all eras, and across all genres. I am never going to claim that I love country music (for example), but conversely I’ll never claim to hate it. I’ve yet to find a genre that I don’t like at least something from. Heck, I enjoyed a grindcore album a couple of days ago - which is something I wasn’t ever sure I’d do. My point, badly made, is that one should never write off entire genres, nor eras. Just because you haven’t heard something yet that you enjoy, doesn’t mean you never will. And even if you never do, that doesn’t mean others don’t enjoy it. There’s no point pissing on someone else’s parade.

So yeah, Paul, as much as I usually enjoy your posts (and surprisingly often agree with them), it’s not a nice thing to do, to tell someone that they’re not missing much. Rather, let them listen and decide for themselves that they hadn’t missed much. Or, maybe - just maybe - they might like it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I've been deservedly shot down in flames for airing my highly subjective ignorant views on King Crimson's later albums. After all, I'm hardly a world authority on King Crimson when I've admittedly only listened to each of their albums once only, so why should anyone take any notice of what I think. That will be my Epitaph:- Here lies Psychedelic Paul who knows next to nothing about King Crimson. Tongue
