I'm a prog musician, pure hobbyist. Former bassist to one of Bob Fripp's Guitar Craft students, Alonzo "Lon" Jones. Friend of many, including Mr Fripp, Peter Banks, John Goodsall, Fareed Haque etc. I had my chance to join a band and have trod the rock & roll stage, but correctly avoided that pathway. The genre seems "stuck" to me, mired down by the weight of its history. The best talent in the genre is approaching 100, and I don't see that level of talent arising. Who is the new Bob Fripp, Steve Howe, Chris Squire etc.? I listen to many new releases, it all sounds derivative to me. I'm waiting for true innovation in prog, and haven't heard much. We spend much of our time on PA hashing over & over which Genesis song with Gabriel was better than the other and so forth. Frustrating. As. Hell.

I do see what you mean now. Thank you for making it clear! If I were to suggest some bands/artists that in my ears don't sound derivative, as you called them, they would be the Dillinger Escape Plan, Opeth, Sigur Ros, A Perfect Circle, Pain of Salvation, IQ's 21st century stuff, Steven Wilson, Thank You Scientist, maybe some of Tesseract's material, King Gizzard, Devin Townsend, Frost*, Leprous, OSI. I hope some of these will give you at least some faith in new prog!
