My random listening for tonight: shuffle of about 14000 tracks - (this is what popped up to the top of the list).

In the past I have been posting these in the Prog Polls section, but found that most people just chose and answered only for their top choice, and did not rank or comment on the other tracks. I'm trying this instead to see how the response goes. If its good, and people like this format, I'll continue posting here periodically.

SO...

Rank these 5 tracks, 1st thru 5th in order of your preference/liking and make comments about any/all. I will compile results later if there are enough responses within a few days.  Videos are posted for tracks you may not be familiar with.

Time We Left This World Today  -  Hawkwind
Grande Etudes De Paganini, S141, No. 3 in G-Sharp Minor: "La Campanella"  -  Franz Liszt (Valentina Lisitsa, Pianist)
The Needle Lies  -  Queensryche
Twist and Shout  -  Mamas and Papas (cover)
Feel Like Falling  -  Riverside

This vid is not from the album I have, but fun to watch her play!

Thanks for posting the relevant videos as I didn't know any of those songs previously. I fell instantly in love with The Mamas & Papas version of Twist & Shout, so I'd like to give a shout out to Mama Cass Elliot as my number one choice. I'm unsure of what order to place the other abstract entries in though. I think it's the most diverse musical poll I've ever seen. Smile

Thanks for you feedback.  Of course these random lists are diverse--I don't choose them, the system does.  But I guess the test of the list format is to see how people will respond.  Is the list too "abstract" for people to want to rank??

For me personally, the answer is no. My ranking is as follows:

1. Valentina Lisiitsa/Liszt.  (this reminds me of the time when I'd spend hours watching her play with un-human speed and accuracy--very nice to revisit!).
2. Feel Like Falling. (One of the best Riverside albums, third best track IMO)
3. The Needle Lies  (Its better in context of this epic album, but still right good as stand alone track)
4. Hawkwind  (I haven't spent time listening to this much, but sense it could be a big "grower").
5. Twist and Shout  (not bad, I think I prefer the Beatles version).

^ In my case, yes, the songs were too diverse for me to decide how to rank them. I would have found it much easier to rank the songs if there'd been four other Sunshine Pop songs alongside The Mamas & the Papas, or four other Space Rock songs alongside Hawkwind. Smile

Could it also be: the fact that you had never heard any of the tracks before may also be a factor(??).

Maybe I should simplify the question a bit: instead of "ranking" them in the sense of pitting the merits of the individual tracks against each other, just list them by order of which you like best to worst (or "least-best"). If what you come up with simply reflects preferences for the musical style/genre of each track, I think that's fine (in this case, psych rock, classical, sixties pop, hard rock, heavy/pop).

The fact that you gravitated first to the Mamas and Papas perhaps suggests that you're a child of the sixties/seventies??  Big smile

That sounds like a good plan of action, and yes, I was born in the year of '59, so I'm just old enough to remember The Mamas & the Papas back in their heyday. Smile
