I'm relatively new to Kreator.  I am most familiar with their latest two releases Phantom Antichrist and Gods of Violence.  The rest of their albums were a first listen for me.  It is difficult for me to form an opinion.  I'm not really into death metal so their earlier albums were a little too harsh for my tastes.  I think that I preferred their later output.

Kreator's first two albums were released before the famous Death debut album. I would not call them death metal. Could be that the early Kreator was an influence on extreme metal later to come.

They blew my mind when I first heard them in 1990, I was a teenager. I had never heard such fast and angry music before (them). LOL

I imagine if I heard them back then I might have dug them more.  I was really into Metallica and Anthrax back in the day.  I also liked Megadeth and some Exodus and Testament.  I never really got into bands like Venom or Slayer though.  Wiki mentions that Kreator were part of a Big Four of "teutonic thrash metal" consisting of them, Destruction, Sodom and Tankard.  I think that Sodom is the only one of those bands that I have heard anything from.

I've never liked Venom. Slayer got a few albums I enjoy.
I listened to Megadeth and Testament, and obviously Metallica back in 1990. Along with Iron Maiden, Judas priest and King Diamond. But Kreator was I guess the heaviest thing I heard back then. It was Terrible Certainty that I listened to first, I still enjoy the album to this day. Big smileLOL

I think you should try Tankard, they're fun! LOL

Well if I could chime in with my opinion on Kreator, they're definitely one of the most even bands in thrash metal, similarly to Overkill and Slayer. Most of it is enjoyable (if you're in the mood).

My favorite is Terrible Certainty, great balance between vicious riffing and technicality, but Coma of Souls is their go-to album if you want your thrash refined and the aggression somewhat scaled down... Speaking of aggression, Extreme Aggression from 1989 is great too!

If you haven't checked them out yet, please do yourself a favor and try two albums:
Coroner - No More Color (1989)
Artillery - By Inheritance (1990)
and see if you like technical stuff. PM me if it clicks!!!
