Mostly off topic, I bought some music today including Franceso Guccini's Radici (thanks Raff!), Danse Memoir, Danse (thanks Lorenzo!) and Stanley Jordan's Magic Touch (thanks micky!). These weren't the first ones I bought that I got to know through these polls. Keep 'em coming!

That is a great pleasure for me, sir, and only fair given that you just made me buy the album that has the best cover of all time (agree, but hadn't been aware of it) on it!

Winner of the "give a new very different spin on an old classic" category are the Cardigans... I'm surprised, the few songs I knew about them before didn't really cut the mustard... honorary mention in the category: Zoot, Chris Cornell, Sileas. Winner of the "the original is so good and the cover's done well - what can go wrong?" category is The Sea Song by The Unthanks... never heard of this band before but they have the sensibility to take that very unique song and add their own spark to it. Honorary mention: Living Color, Annie Haslam. Winner of the "I just play this song as if it's mine" category is Ozzy Osbourne, well done you! Honorary mention of course Jimi Hendrix, Patti Smith, and Annie gets h.m.s in two categories because this fits as well.

The new poll will start tomorrow and will be the first completely open, non-themed poll that we've had in a while. No theme, you pick your 3 (or whatever) tracks that you want to share, but you'll still have to decide which one you want the team to vote on. This will continue to be non-prog, however, the proto-prog and prog related categories are open if you want to use them. I figure that these two categories get ignored enough that this can be your chance to feature music that is listed under those categories if you want to. If you don't want to, that's fine too. Start thinking about what you want to post, and then watch for the new poll to show up.

awesome... that is a kick in the pants.. I still owe you though. I never did tell you how much I enjoyed the Yonder clip you posted sometime back.. I wanted to stay out of that thread. Even thought that wasn't poll related.. that also went into the mobile player.. and has got me quite a few WTF are you listening to from the guys and gals in the office. I told them the truth.. it's art man... oh and it earned me a piss test from the manager.... So yeah.. I still owe you. Really glad you dug that though.. when that album came out it did hit a lot of people like a ton of bricks.. #1 on the charts IIRC for nearly a year. I would call it the best cover song ever done.

My first two votes are easy: EDIT: 3. Living Colour - Memories Can't Wait (Talking Heads) There were two other songs that nearly made it into the 3rd position: Senor Coconut - The Robots (Kraftwerk) and Sileas - Ain't No Sunshine (Bill Withers) Edited by I prophesy disaster - August 24 2020 at 10:44 |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Would anyone have voted for Snakefinger - Magic and Ecstasy in their top 3 if it had been submitted instead of Zoot - Eleanor Rigby?

I forgot to mention it early on, but I really loved Mary Fahl's take on Joni Mitchell's "Urge for Going". It would have definitely made my top 3 if it had been nominated. However, as I said before, all of our selections were outstanding (with that little exception I hinted at in a previous post). Looking forward to another covers poll in the future!

ahh man... come on. That was an amazing piece of music.. did you really forget about it “Church bells: A sound that has deeply and contradictorily touched me since my childhood. After the war we lived surrounded by ruins, only the church tower was intact and the bells would burst through the ruins every hour of the day. Watching Notre Dame burn on live TV evoked the memory. Three weeks later I started to write Yonder.” |

To be honest, I wasn't really interested in the track name, so that was not even forgotten, rather never memorised.

My top 3 are:
The Smashing Pumpkins - Never Let Me Down (I love the Smashing Pumpkins and was not aware of this song) Zoot - Eleanor Rigby. (One of my favorite Beatles' songs and I really like their take on it). Living Colour - Memories Can't Wait (I was familiar with this song, but don't know that I ever connected it was a cover of a Talking Heads' song...although I have that Talking Heads' album, I guess that I just wasn't that familiar with the original).

My three votes went to Señor Coconut, Zoot and Chris Cornell. I really liked that Living Colours cover as well, I actually listened to the Talking Heads album with that song for the first time yesterday.
