Well ... I included him, as I've forgiven him for that overplayed song with the Matchbox 20 guy.

Forgive and forget, I say!

^ I forgot to include Jimi Hendrix in my Top 10 list, mainly because I didn't realise he was included in ProgArchives. Embarrassed

It's good to see David Bowie get a first mention. Thumbs Up

I actually don't have a lot of solo artists, at least not in prog. I was a little disappointed that Santana doesn't count. In cases like Santana, it is hard to decide if they truly are solo artists, or if they are groups named after the main artist.

If you want to put Santana in your list, then I'll count it as a vote for Carlos Santana as a solo artist. Wink

10 Björk
(was 10 Edgar Froese, kind of par with Hackett, who will snatch enough votes anyway)

I had forgotten Björk as I realised when Tori Amos was mentioned by Jaketejas. Actually Tori, Adrian Belew and Al Di Meola belong to the 11-15 group together with Froese and Hackett. Initially I had thought prog is more of a band thing but there is any number of amazing solo artists. Probably I've still forgotten someone, but...

Thanks. But after some thought, I'll keep my list the way it is. Thumbs Up

^^ It's not too late to add Bjork to your Top 10 list before I do the first summing up of the votes so far. Smile

Brian Eno! Ahhhh ... good call!

The guy is everywhere, even hovering with other bands outside of Prog (but interesting nonetheless) that I like ... including Devo.

We have five matching names in our joint Top 10's. Thumbs Up

I'll add up the points tomorrow morning after I've had a good night's sleep. The voting's been incredibly varied so far, so it'll be interesting to see how the overall Top 10 shapes up.

Uh oh! I see that there is another rendition of the 90125 debate going on. This time it is in the Quantity versus Quality thread.

I am NOT getting involved this time.

Lots of great choices for solo artists on here! Many names are overlapping, but not always the same ones between different people. Interesting

I had a few I wanted to include but didn't because they aren't included as prog on this site. They had proggy elements at times, but I understand why they're not listed. (Jane Siberry, Jeff Buckley, Regina Spektor). I listed them in order of my enjoyment of them, not by how much they contributed to the history and depth of the genre.

1. Kate Bush
2. Peter Gabriel
3. Steven Wilson
4. David Bowie
5. Tori Amos
6. Frank Zappa
7. Mike Oldfield
8. Steve Hackett
9. Bjork
10. Rick Wakeman (based on his handful of top albums)

The late great Jeff Buckley. So sad we lost him so young. Grace is a beautiful album.
