Interestingly enough, there were four versions of the song that came out at about the same time: both the Talking Heads and Foghat versions along with one by Bryan Ferry and another by Levon Helm.

This all playlist is now tied with the Guilty Pleasures playlist at 105. Though there were more videos posted in the Guilty Pleasures thread. YouTube doesn't allow "kids" songs to be added to playlists. None of that so far.
I'm going to break that tie with one of my all time favorite covers, so out of competition. (Besides I have plenty to choose from and have thought about another 10+ songs to post for a round 2.) CCR: 11 minutes of epic.

Sorry I'm not able to do much other that list the songs that left a positive impression on me out of all the ones that were posted. This may or may not help in picking which entry you want to use. I'm also leaving off the ones that I am already familiar with.
Living Colour - Memories Can't Wait (I'm only familiar with their first album which I really like) Snakefinger - Magic and Ecstasy Heathen - Death on Two Legs Zoot - Eleanor Rigby The Unthanks - Sea Song Jad & Den Quartet - Trilogy The Smashing Pumpkins - Never Let Me Down Again Charles Bradley - Changes Richard Thompson - Oops I Did it Again Senor Coconut - The Robots Dominique Horwitz - Die Seerauber-Jenny Carol Tatum - Nothing Else Matters Riot - Born to Be Wild Riot - Racing with the Devil on a Spanish Highway (ok, I really like what I heard from this band here. I've never heard them before, but I will be exploring them further. Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Visionary Mountains Patti Smith Group - So You Want to Be a Rock n Roll Star Annie Haslam - Ripples Laibach - Across the Universe There are several others that I already know and love, but I am excluding them to vote for those that are unknown to me and taking away that advantage they might have on my vote over the unknown tracks. It has been a while since I heard that album, and I thought I must have heard Memories Can't Wait on the alternative radio I used to listen to way back then because, even though it sounded familiar, I couldn't place it on that album. You are correct though, sir. But I do remember Cult of Personality and several of the others from that album. Anyhoo, I will regrettably have to take that off my voting possibilities. Raff has my permission to smack you for that one.

I'm glad we're only able to nominate one each, since there have been so many great, great entries, if they ALL were in the running for the final vote, it would be just about impossible. I know we're not done yet, but kudos to Raff for this idea It's worth doing again (kind of like covers )

@TCat: Very helpful and I'm delighted that you picked four of mine. I'm surprised you listed Visionary Mountains because I thought that that album (Nightingales and Bombers) is very well known among prog fans. It's my favourite of Manfred Mann's Earth Band and a five star album that I recommend to everyone. If more indicate that this was new to them, I may actually nominate it, although I'm tending to The Robots currently. Harder than ever picking the nomination. It seems not everyone knows the original of that one either, by the way. It's here: It may be good to post originals of the nominated songs eventually. Of course some are very well known, but generally I'd not want to vote for simply what I like best (because of course if a band covers a stellar song in an OK way, it may be good just because the original was great, not because the cover added much quality), but rather for what is either better or gives a nice surprising spin on the original.

The jazz version of Trilogy was very impressive, by the way. (So many songs there, I have no idea anymore who suggested what.)

And thank you very much for the kudos! I am so glad this poll was so successful, especially after having missed the last couple. We definitely need to do covers again, since there are so many great ones that deserve to be explored. As I posted yesterday, we might let this poll run for even a bit longer than the coming weekend, unless someone already has an idea for the next one and wants to start it as soon as possible. I'll ask Micky again if he wants to suggest something, but don't be upset if he doesn't. He's just like that sometimes. Anyway, I managed to listen to the whole playlist, and found a lot of great covers I wasn't familiar with. Besides some that need no introduction (like Johnny Cash's "Hurt", which I found very touching), I was particularly impressed by The Heimatdamisch's cover of "Sweet Child o' Mine". While the cover of "Highway to Hell" was more of a parody, this one sounded more "serious", if you get my meaning, and - at least to me - even better than the original (I'm not a big G'n'R fan anyway).

I don't know what song to nominate
When we started these polls, it was making a nomination first and then what other songs are worth mentioning, but it's got the other way around at some point and everyone starts with possible songs and in the end choose one. But it's making harder to choose a final nomination. Johnny Cash - Hurt - famous cover, a favorite definitely, but it would be a choice too obvious. Smashing Pumpkins - Never Let Me Down - one of the best covers ever, so unique but still recognize - hey it's Depeche Mode. The Wounded - Smalltown Boy - love this cover. Paradise Lost covered this song as well but i find it less interesting. Riot - the Al Di Meola cover - might be a choice, a very pleasant surprise for me when i heard it. Tough choice, next poll I'm gonna nominate my song first and then post more songs that fit the topic.

@Cristi, I feel the same for myself. I should not have put up do many.
Of your choices, I agree the Cash one is too obvious and one of my all time favorites. The Smashing Pumpkins cover of DM stood out for me. The Riot cover of Di Meola was a complete and bold surprise, but I didn't feel like it added something new or different, while Smashing Pumpkins did. |

Hi, MM should, hereby, be completely and totally banned from this poll ... for having the courage to make hits out of someone else's songs, instead of their own. Goodness, shall we start with Bob Dylan? And when MM got bummed with Bob Dylan, he did Bruce Springsteen, and when he got bored with the Boss ... he did Mike Heron ... That's one too many covers, right? Well, that leaves STACKRIDGE out of the equation, though I think there was only one actual cover, but a few songs about the Beatles? Sad thing is ... few, if any folks here have heard Mike's solo albums (both excellent), and have any idea where he was before, sharing vocals with another inmate from the hippie asylum!

OK. added both Cristi and Pedro's suggestions to the poll. Regarding Manfred Mann, no one is disqualified here, especially if their covers are good. MM also covered The Police's "Demolition Man", which I almost posted here, but will probably keep for a future edition.

I only know Manfred Mann's Earth Band material from the radio or MTV, and where I grew up, it amounted to the Springsteen covers and the song Runner from what I can recall. While I liked the songs, it didn't get me into exploring their albums. So, the cover was new to me as well. I'll look into the album. I thought about posting originals but that would really blow things up. I guess for ones for lesser know originals. I also really liked Dominique Horwitz “Die Seeräuber-Jenny”. Had to look up a traditional rendition for comparison, and came up with this one. That Doors version of Stairway was fun. These covers where a song is done in a style of another artist is a neat subcategory to look at. I have one or two I might post later as 'bonus' material.
