I felt really drawn to this poll--especially with the timing of the death of Ennio Morricone. So many other GREAT under-appreciated soundtracks have come to mind since I posted the Clint Mansell song. (BTW: A movie that I HIGHLY recommend. If any movie was led by its soundtrack--and effectively so, it is this one).

Didn't know a bunch of these movies--or their soundtrack songs--so was glad to hear them, but--and maybe this is the way these will go--I found myself drawn to voting for the familiar ones that had already been favorites. But will definitely be listening to more of Wicker Man, Gone Girl, and Osanda soundtracks (all movies I've never seen).

Voted:
1. "Now We Are Free" (Gladiator) (love Lisa Gerrard--love her Whale Rider soundtrack)
2. "Farewell" (Crouching Tiger) (another movie that I always felt was greatly enhanced by its gorgeous music)
3. "Pi" (couldn't help myself--such an amazing soundtrack!)

Drew, in these polls you cant vote for the song you have suggested. This is a rule of ours. I guess you didn't know it. Anyway, if you want you can vote for another song.

I am still deciding on a third song to vote for, but I have decided on two, one of which is the Clint Mansell track. So if Drew votes for another song, I'll 'take' his vote in the poll.

Didn't know we could vote for our own choice.

Well, technically we can... but it would be part of the normal "rules" to not do it. But then BrufordFreak takes part for the first time, so maybe we shoudn't be too picky (many first time participants have done this)... but it's right somebody's gotta say something.

While it's a series expectation, I only requested that people not vote for their own nominations in the poll in the OP. I also wrote "I will not add your choices to the poll until Thursday evening, I think, Pacific Standard Time, so you're free to Vaseline and vacillate at least until then. Once they are up feel free to start voting for your three, and there is no hurry. You don't have to be done by the time the next poll goes up" and then later said that I'd do it on Thursday early morning (knew I'd be busy that day and into the evening" so I broke my initial expectations for myself. That was kind of bad of me even if it's no big deal in the grand scheme of things. What matters more to me is that all participants vote three times and post their three choices when they get the chance. I don't treat this as a contest at all. What matters the most to me is that we are listening to each others choices.

I would guess that each poll will have its own unique rules/ guidelines, but there will be some standards across the series.

Oops!Embarrassed I didn't get the rules the first time I read through them--that's why I'd been avoiding them until now. Sorry!

Vote #3:  I really like the Bruno Nicolai "the case of the bloody iris" 1972--something very nostalgic, almost happy, Euro-Pink Panther to it, but it didn't make the list!(?) Guess I'll vote "Big Bottom" just to show some love for the ingenious script and lyrics of that legendary "rockumentary" (Plus, I just happened to be singing it yesterday to my wife.)--(after she was noticing a truck without mud flaps.)

I liked that Nicolai one too, and OMG with the mud flaps.

This is the one I've sung the most around my wife. If not "Stonehenge", this would be my Spinal Tap choice. :)

I couldn't imagine singing anything around her like "Big Bottom" (I'm very prudish with her, although we both did love the film Betty Blue).

Is it okay to like Howard Shores Lord of the Rings theme/film music, it is very captivating to me. And removes me from day to day stress of today and into another world

Of course, and feel comfortable giving the "Howard Shore - "Foundations of Stone" - The Two Towers" option a vote, although then give two others a vote if you haven't voted for any yet. That was Raff's choice, and I tend to like Raff's tastes in music, but then I've been liking everyone's tastes in music across polls (of course I have had my preferences as should we all). The voting and listening is not just for those who nominated choices.

I am also with Icarium.  I love the films and the music, both, and they have nostalgic value of good times with my son for me.  LOTR extended version marathons for many, many years before he went off to college.

I apologize for not having chimed in so far. I did start listening to all the suggestions put forward in this thread, but then I stopped. Blame a rather blah week (problems sleeping, hot weather, feeling overall depressed, etc.), and also the fact that I've never been a big movie person. I'll try to pick my three faves during the weekend.

To be honest, I never really likd the Jackson Lord of the Rings films. I can enjoy them more now. I loved the books growing up and read them many times. And although it gets some derision I also really liked Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings film.

With Peter Jackson, I preferred his earlier films -- Heavenly Creatures I loved. Bad Taste was fun, and I enjoyed Braindead. The LoTR films just never connected to me anywhaere near as much as the books, but this is common.   Thee film I liked at least as much as the novel was Truffaut's Fahrenheit 451.

For family fare with my daughter, Ghibli was where it was at. Just re-watched Spirited Away the other day with my son (he's my youngest), although he didn't like it as much as my daughter had. His favourite fiction film is Inception, but usually he prefers documentary type stuff (science/nature programs). My favourite family fantasy films by the way are Time Bandits and The Dark Crystal.

The three I voted for:

1) Bernard Herrmann - "Vertigo Theme" – Vertigo
2) Clint Mansell - "πr2"- π
3) Wim Mertens - "Struggling for Pleasure" - The Belly of an Architect

The Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone,  Zbigniew Preisner, and Tiberiu Olah were also in contention for the third spot. Mertens just won out.

If it had stayed in, L'arena would have been in the third spot.

^ Ugh, now I regret my decision to change it.    It was never going to be easy nominating just one.

By the way, The Wicker Man trailer for those who might be interested:

And A Muppet Wicker Man trailer (spoilers):

EDIT: Sorry, I think I'm ruining the flow of the thread.

I listen to the wonderful youtube playlist now. This is going to be tough... I have now listened to the first three (Paul Giovanni, Lisa Gerrard, John Murphy), and they're all vote-worthy. Thumbs Up

I can't believe that I forgot about that, it makes listening to the selections so much easier. Brilliant idea for the polls.

So many great choices to choose from once again.  Here's my top three, but I must say I went back and forth several times before coming to this conclusion.

1. Rezner & Ross - "Technically Missing" from Gone Girl.  Rezner is quickly becoming another favorite of mine among soundtrack composers.

2. Clint Mansell - "Pi R Squared" from Pi.  A late entry, but definitely a huge favorite.

3. Ennio Morricone - "Magic & Ecstasy" from Exorcist II.  Morricone had to take one of the top spots as I have always loved his music, but this is one I was less familiar with, up until now.

Honorable Mentions are Osanda and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

By the way, there is a not much interest in the prog polls, so I'll leave that one alone.

...or people just think, I'm happy to participate in a prog poll but I'm less happy to be asked all the time "should I do this or that" and rather than asking, you can just do. Wink Or the avalanche of postings here and things to listen to is just too much to answer to everything.

By the way, look at the Interactive poll team thread. I don't want to take my spot the following week so you may offer to jump in.

I am open for whatever the next poll is, prog or not prog. When will the next one start? This poll might be done by tomorrow.

Monday was suggested and that’s when I did this. A week between starting polls is I think good, and a little respite can be nice for the timely.

Apart from the fact that I have a lot of work to do next week and therefore it isn't clear right now who runs the next poll (I was on top of the list), I'm still not too happy about a rhythm any faster than once a week. (Which would mean that the answer is "not before Monday", but the real answer of course has to be given by who runs it.)
