I need more Magma. I only have two by them so far(not counting a compilation cd I got for free at one of their shows). I've seen them three times live with the last time being the best. Great band.

We all need more Magma! Wink

I haven't seem them yet, but I have tickets for a show in October. Hopefully it will not be cancelled because of Covid-19! (or some new global disaster that has emerged in the mean time...)

Not me. I have tried over and over to acquire the taste for Magma. Not my jam.

have you by chance tried the debut..  that is the album for them .. pretty much every band has one..  that if you don't like.. you won't like the band.

Not only by far their most accessible.. but far and away their best. Some incredibly beautiful music on that album along with enough of the wacko crazy cuckoo  to allow one to dip ones toes into safely if one is a bit more traditonal in ones tastes.

yeah i do.. in a purely musical sense I think it is.  Obviously that is not the same as saying it is their most progressive.. out there.. or flat out creative album.  I think if we've learned anything over the years here Steve is for all that prog fan supposedly cherishes those qualities.. in the end.. one gravitates to good music or music they related to. I've probably heard as many prog albums as anyone on this site..  and probably a damn slight more than most and through all of that.. it is hard to not put that Magma as one of the most musically perfect albums I've ever heard so yeah.. it is an easy call to call it their best album for me. It has it all...

I put the debut on a pedestal. AMAZING album, a cut above their other amazing albums.

Correct, Sir !! There is a certain ‘playfulness’ on the debut which was barely there on 1001 and non-existent by MDK. Even displays some circus-like loopiness which is priceless. You can hear they had a lot of fun doing this one. Super-special album indeed.

For some reason my least favorite album is actually MDK, I still like it a lot but I find my self return mostly to their debut, Udu Wudu, Attahk and my favorite 1001 Centigrades.

MDK isn’t my favorite either. It certainly has a lot of great moments, but the fourth track drags on a little too long for my taste. Kohntarkosz, with it’s slow build, is the one the really got me into them. My favorite now is probably the stripped-down Wurdah Itah. I love how each record sort of keeps the same core emphasis (vocals, drums, bass), but colors the sound differently with the arrangements and instrumentation.

I prefer live versions of MDK. I love the versions on Opera de Reims and Retrospektiw 1-2.

My favourite studio albums are Kobaia,, Wurdah Itah, Attahk, 1001 Degrees, and E-Re. The debut is the album that I have returned to more than any other.   I loved KA when it came out, but that’s one that I quickly largely lost much interest in. In that’s top of the heap for some, but it came across as rather Magma Prog by numbers to me.

Although MDK is not my biggest fav from Magma (it´s their first) I prefer the original studio album version. Really not a big fan of that noisy basssolo in the end of the most live versions.

Enjoy the show!  If you've never seen them live in concert, you are in for a life-changing positive experience this evening!  The power and intensity of Magma on stage is something to behold.  I've heard Robert Fripp describe a King Crimson live concert as a "hot date."  I've seen Crimson 3 times in concert over the decades... while excellent, of course, if Crimson is a "hot date" then I'm not sure how to describe Magma live.  (At least, not without getting banned.)

I haven't been following anything Magma recently.  Is McGaw and Bussonnet still playing with them?  I love watching those guys as much as (or more than) Vander.  Bussonnet is just a monster on the bass.  I think the last time I saw them play live McGaw wasn't there, but Bussonnet was.

I love Magma, love listening to live albums, and feel sorry that my Magma concert experience was disappointing.  The venue called The Venue (a nightclub in downtown Vancouver) didn't have a good sound system, the mixing was poor, and it was far too loud for me.  Was anyone posting here at that concert some years ago?  It was inexpensive.
