I have voted for LZ for the simple reason that they are the best live act I have seen. However I have a liking for heavier hard rock bands.
However if bonham had not died I think LZ in the 80s would have had a very different sound with keyboards featuring much more in their music. See carouselambra from the in through the out door album for how they were heading. |

Hi, When it comes to the concert circuit, very few bands can you count in your fingers that stand up to Led Zeppelin in their first 3 years ... their shows and bootlegs were historic and I think it was something like in LA ... 3 shows ... sold out in 20 minutes to give you an idea ... JT was fine, but never had that kind or attention. I like JT, some, but I get really tired of it by the end of the albums, with 2 exceptions. In general, within a "progressive" ideal, JT would be better, however, LZ did not get the chance to continue and give us something ... Bonzo departing us, left a void in the group mechanics ... that was really difficult to duplicate and maintain. All in all, for this poll's purposes, LZ should be the choice but in this place some folks think that JT is one of the gods, and it ain't. AND, JT's appreciation, specially in a "progressive" mold did not start until much later ... even though they had the material for it ... but at the time, no one thought of it as much ... my girlfriend, btw, would rather see LZ because it was sexy, and JT was boring! JT is a "boys" band for my taste!

If Bonham does not die then I don't think they hang it up at all. I'm not sure what 80s Led Zeppelin would have sounded like.

May be true but he has come up with riffs and solos that most guitarists would give their right arm for.

There are better guitarists I'm sure, but it's not all down to how technical and precise they are. Like Zappa, he had a style and sound that was very distinctive and worked brilliantly with the music, eve if there were a few rough edges. The same could be said of Alex Lifeson - distinctive style/sound etc - who I believe IS far batter 'technically' than Page, but then Lifeson was in Rush who weren't in the same sales league as Zep.. ![]() I once heard it said that Eddie Van Halen was once asked what it's like being the best guitarist in the world, to which he allegedly replied something like "I don't know. You'd have to ask Alex Lifeson" |

People are going to shoot me, but I reckon Jimmy Page is overrated as a guitarist.

Are you sure Zep really knew when to hang it up? What about that time when they invited Phil Collins to play with them

I agree that JT barely fits in the Big 5 or Big 6 list of English prog. But for me it still beats Zep by a long shot

There was a time I probably would have said Zep, but in subsequent decades that has turned over to Tull quite decidedly. I can't think the last time I listened to Zep on purpose. That said, they did have some great songs

I actually find it hard to make my mind on this one, they are both great... I guess I have to give the nod to Zepp, though. Still, I only wish, when they toured together, that they might have helped each other on a few songs... for example, I can think of Stairway to Heaven, if only Anderson had come in to play the flute for them in the intro (and then join in in the last hard rocking part of the song with his flute again). Or perhaps on Kashmir, have either the bass player or the keyboard player from Tull help out, so that they could play both instruments (or on some other song from Zepp that uses keyboards). Or Plant might have come out to help Anderson sing whenever a song required flute and singing at the same time.

Not counting the Beatles(oops I said their name ;) )as a single digit youngster, Zepp were the first band I got into in a big way and in some ways paved the way for me getting into arena rock, hard rock and ultimately prog rock. However, after I got into prog I gradually "outgrew" LZ in favor of more complex and interesting(in my mind at the time)music. So these days I would say Tull but I still have an appreciation for LZ and in fact was playing a bit of 4 earlier today.

I like some Led Zep and I don't like some Tull... but if I make a top 5 list of albums from both of these bands, it'd be all Tull (no. 6 maybe Zep... maybe).

Robert Plant is a better singer, while Ian Anderson is a better flute player.
![]() Quite different bands anyway. Voted for Zeps though.

Led Zeppelin, easily. I especially love their acoustic/folk atmosphere, on the other hand I never got into JT folk. My favs, Rush, took obviously a lot of inspiration from Zeppelin. Without Zep influence there wouldn't be 70s Rush classics.

Zeps sound American to me. All the best bands were English and European

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Tough choice indeed...............
The first 7 Zep lp's are very good....but so are 7 or 8 of the first 12 Tull lp's....Tull having a larger body of quality work even though they slipped later on. Hard call to make....but Stand Up and Benefit are two lp's that have always deeply resonated with me...so for those two I give the edge to Tull.....but it's a slight one.
