Looks like today I may be able to get 2 albums in, my cup runneth over lol.

Alright off now to listen to December and that will FINALLY finish the Moody Blues studio albums.
Tastes are different for sure, but have to say about Procolīs first that itīs their most sixties sounding album. I really love that too, but itīs just full of great pop songs and nothing more. What is the greatest in Procol is "In Held Twas In I" (as Logan already mentioned) and thatīs the main reason to listen "Shine On Brightly" although other songs are great too.

About Family, really love all their first five albums, although "Music In a Dollīs House" is the greatest. But again, if thatīs too sixties sounding to you, then "Fearless" is a great alternative. To me Rogerīs personal voice has always been just wonderful thing, hard to understand why there is so many people that canīt stand it. I understand lot better why people donīt like Robert Smith voice (I love it also).

Ok, another one for this 'Fearless.' I might have to check that one out. And you think the Family singer's voice is not that bad.. Maybe he's like the VdGG guy in that many on here seem to not like his voice(but in his case I actually like it), so who knows maybe I'll like this guy too. Ok, thanks again for the suggestions.

Keys to the Kingdom is the only one you haven't heard? If so then no you aren't misssing much. Lol. I was trying to tell Yesesis earlier to avoid it but not sure if he did. It's pretty bland mor for the most part. This is coming from someone who likes Phil Collins solo albums and Mike and the Mechanics. Wink
No, surprisingly The Other Side Of Life, although I know Your Wldest Dreams of course. I never found the Moraz years that exciting.

I think he added something with his synth playing that wasn't there before and added some new excitement to the band. However, at some point they just went too far in a poppy direction. I can handle poppy to an extent but I still typically prefer to have some kind of rock element.

Anyway, if you haven't heard TOSOL I would say listen to it or get it only if you enjoy the other albums with Patrick Moraz. It sounds to me that you don't though so I would say probably skip it.

Actually no it doesn't pre date Days of Future passed but it does pre date in the court of the crimson king. Some people act like things went from normal rock to prog over night with the first KC album. No, it was a gradual thing. Family's first album was just one of several that moved in that direction. All kidding aside the vocals aren't that odd once you get used to them and the album really is worth listening to if you like music from that time period. The next one they did "family entertainment" is very good also but I haven't heard anything else by them other than those first two. Very different than the Moodies but still worthwhile.

Well and I think the second half of Freak Out! contributed to it as well, for sure. Ok, I guess if the vocals aren't that bad then.. and I did promise so no turning back now lol.

Of any band in PA, I have the most by Magma, not just for the studio albums, but lives, followed by Art Zoyd, Robert Wyatt and some others. I haven't been discovering a lot of new music for some years, so it's insane how much I got to know over eight or so years. I still discover new-to-me music, but at a snail pace comparatively. I don't listen to my CDs or records much, or my iPod which has a huge number of albums on it, but I still stream new-to-me music. When I really like an album, I'm the kind who likes to play it again and again and again. In one week, I might only listen to one album multiple times. I'm getting back into more variety in my diet (for a while I stopped listening to music and just listened to podcasts). I still discover new-to-me stuff on youtube regularly (mostly psych, folk and electronic).

I only have Family's first two albums in my collection.

Man, I can't afford thousands of CDs. I have MAYBE a couple hundred. Mostly stuff that I just love for driving like Foreigner or Journey Greatest Hits. Or CDs that I leave out to impress company when they come over(like Beatles or classical CDs are good for that). I plan to buy all of those core 7 Moody CDs for sure to leave out. But like if I was going to buy ALL of the great music I've discovered on here... all the Magma CDs, Can CDs, Art Zoyd CDS, Gong CDs, VdGG CDs, Univers Zero CDs, Henry Cow CDs, etc etc etc it would cost a fortune. Have to budget you know. IDK, I'll buy as much as I can but don't have a tree that grows money unfortunately. Anyway I'll listen to those first two Family albums for sure, thanks again for the suggestion.

I think Music in a Doll's House is a really cool and interesting album from 1968, whether you will, I don't know. The vocals are rather divisive and might take some getting used to (not so much on some songs as others). I'd say that 1969's Family Entertainment, the follow-up, is rather easier listening. I think you'd like it, but who knows. Go where your ears take you, and your heart guides you.

It's one of those bands that i expect you'd get around sooner or later if you decide to really explore that early progressive rock scene. I'm not of the pushing through complete discographies mindset, except with a few or ones with limited releases, and have wanted to know lots and lots of different ones, and explore new musical avenues. Most of my music knowledge is more general than specialised.

Ok, you seem to know an awful lot of music artists but yeah if you're not listening to all their albums then that makes more sense. I just got in a groove there with the Moodies and didn't want to stop lol. Ok then, this singer sounds horrible, but I'll try to pretend it's PG just haven't an especially bad outing lol. We'll see how it goes.

Well, if you want to hear an album that sort of got the prog ball rolling before most then you could do a lot worse than the first Family album called "music from a doll's house." There's a lot of experimentation on it. You'll hear violins, saxophones, mellotron, cool musical interludes, bluesy jams, psychy guitar and yes a singer who sort of resembles a horny goat at times. Enjoy! Tongue

What lol. And I'm supposed to be excited about listening to this band?

Barclay James Harvest I'm already a fan of, they're great. And now.. the Alan Parsons Project I am excited about listening to because I certainly remember Games People Play and, of course, Eye in the Sky from the 80's. Really good stuff. But I did promise at least 1 Family album. So the plan now is to listen to those best like 3 or 4 Procol Harum albums, then 1 family album(obviously if I really like it then I'll listen to more), then onto Alan Parsons!

That's true. I was going to call it an unholy union of those three (having watched the Omen recently), but decided not to. Now that you mention a goat, that would have been really appropriate terminology.

^Roger Chapman also kind of sounds like a goat.

Family, Barclay James Harvest and Strawbs are all worthy bands to check out next. Also, the war of the worlds album(which doesn't really sound like MB but has Justin Hayward on it). ;) Also, the Alan Parsons Project and ELO.

Obviously I agree with you it's way better than that debut album. Man, thank you really for recommending that. A bunch of great MB stuff that I never would have otherwise heard. 'Long Summer Days' was totally kick butt and worth it just for that track alone. Whole thing was great though, so glad you recommended it to me.

As for Procol Harum, the "In Held Twas in I" suite off Shine on Brightly is, I think, terrific, and is very important to me additionally from an early Progressive Rock perspective. For another interesting band to check out from the 60s if you haven;t already (and sorry if it's already been mentioned as I haven't read the thread), there is Family.

Family, ok. Thanks for the recommendation. When I get through these Procol Harum albums I'll go to that deal next lol. I try to listen to one new album a day(or at least average that). So good, lot's of new stuff for me now. Right on.

If you do try Family, a word of warning, you might not like Roger Chapman’s vocals which to me rather sound like the love child of Peter Gabriel of Genesis, Roger Wootton of Comus, and Demis Roussos of Aphrodite's Child (Peter Gabriel being the most obvious to my ears).
