Topic: post-rock prog? Posted: December 30 2004 at 18:37 |
I think post-rock is a subgenre of prog. Any thoughts on this?

If you look at where the early post rockers came from, there was
nothing to do with prog; granted some post rockers are progressive in
their approach, but a lot aren't.

Godspeed You Black Emperor! is post rock. The definition I read is way too general but it said any type of music that uses rock instruments for music other than rock. It's a terrible definition though.

No not prog. It's all morose. It's a separate genre.

In that case, why is GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR! in the ProgArchives data base?
Facetiousness aside, I don't think there is any real problem in classifying Post Rock as part of Progressive Rock, particularly as there is no commonly agreed definition for Progressive Rock.

Dream Theater are in the database but I wouldn't say metal was a part of progressive rock!
Jethro Tull are in the database, but I wouldn't say folk rock was a part of progressive rock!
Opeth are in the database but I wouldn't say death metal was a part of progressive rock!
Devil Doll are in the database but I wouldn't say goth was a part of progressive rock!
Rush are in the database but I wouldn't say hard rock was a part of progressive rock!

I voted a definate NO.
I listen to a lot of Post-rock and it's only a very tiny amount of bands that could be categorised as being Prog like and of course GYBE! is one of them. So to lump the whole genre as prog wouldn't work.

Most post rock bands, and everyone i know who listens to post rock
(quite a number of people i might add) would be offended at the very
suggestion
We all have to remember that things aren't prog just because we (prog fans) like them

and what if its the other way around, accusing bands like opeth, and rush for example for being not prog because you don't like them!

I can admit that there is really bad prog music out there and that
there is really good non prog music out there, I'm just saying that we
shouldn't let our personal preferences cloud our judgement as to what
these bands really are
Oh, and Opeth and Rush rule

If you think I said that, you misunderstood me. I like both Opeth and Rush, and agree that they're both prog. However:
Opeth: progressive death metal
GYBE!: progressive post rock
But because a style has one (or more...) progressive band in it doesn't make the whole style a part of progressive rock!
