I would like to celebrate my newly found love for Porcupine Tree.
It's taken me a while to get into them. I think I prefer the spacier aspects to the really heavy stuff. But overall I like the mix. I had previously listened to Steven's solo work, but it didn't resonate as much as I'd have liked (Raven is about the best). Clearly a talented musician, but this band I think are better and very interesting. Hooray for me :D The progventure cointinues

I like Porcupine Tree too in all of their various musical phases, including Space Rock/Psychedelic Rock, Neo-Prog & Progressive Metal. You may be aware that Steven Wilson is also involved in a Post Rock/Art Rock side project by the name of No-Man.

Which Porcupine Tree musical phase would you consider to be Neo-Prog?
I quite like early Porcupine Tree, but am not a fan. |

To me Neo Prog is bands like Marillion, so I would call PT that. More like psychdelic/art rock, I guess, perhaps prog metal. Not that it matters of course :D

Deadwing is my favorite by them, overall they’re a bit too mellow for me generally, prefer Wilson’s solo work.

picked up Signify, Up the Downstair (which I am working on right now and thoroughly enjoying), In Absentia and Sky Moves Sideways. Not sure how I feel about Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream though, so probably just get Deadwing and maybe Fear of a Blank Planet (a bit too downbeat for my taste). I like the really quirky psychdelia on the first album even though there are a few really weak tunes

I'm listening to the 2-CD Porcupine Tree compilation "Stars Die" right now. I'd recommend it to any Porcupine Tree fans and any fans of Neo-Prog generally.

Signify is one of my favorites by them....Dark Matter is a killer track and the live version years later is even better.
I like all of them up through Deadwing....but Fear of A Blank Planet leaves me a bit cold. |

I talked to this younger guy today who never heard of them. I couldn't believe it especially since he's a musician and seemed familiar with a lot of music the average person doesn't know. He is a big fan of jazz and also the mars volta and 90's rock. He seemed interested though and will probably check them out.

Good for you!! They are an excellent band, both Maitland and Gavin provide wonderful drumming. I enjoy all aspects of the Tree, I can spin Signify then switch to In Absentia and not lose a beat.

Hi,
I don't have some of the earlier material ... for me, PT started with SIGNIFY, and I think I only have one of the albums before that, and I can't even tell you which one it is! I don't dislike Gavin at all, but I have to admit that when I heard him with the Pineapple Thief, the first thought I had was ... he hasn't improved. Sounds exactly the same as it ever was ... and that means the music was not "atmospheric" or good enough to add anything except the easiest material possible over and out! A disappointment in my own estimation, and that's not to say that it is bad ... but I don't think it should be considered great. I'll stick with Steve Gadd ... because you know that in his next appearance, regardless of who it is with ... will be even better than anything he did before ... and by the time you hear him with Kate Bush, you realize the one thing that Bruford says ... that Gavin doesn't have ... he doesn't know what NOT TO DO where there is quiet, except "time" it some more and again! And probably his best in KC might just have been that he was specially strong and reliable in the time keeping area to help define the works even better, but the touches that the other two drummers added were even better, and something that Gavin can not do!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
