Every time I listen to this song, I feel like I've heard the theme near the beginning in a movie (probably a recent one). Does anyone know if it has been used in a movie?

Great shredding is cheddar cheese on a taco (Ron Thal).

Well, it does sound like a lot of classical-era music, so it is likely that a similar tune has evoked a sense of deja-vu in you. However, Pink Floyd did write the soundtrack for two obscure movies, is it possible that you were watching one of them?

Yeah, I think it's been used for something, but it was maybe the theme for an old 80s show or something like that.

One of these days sounds a lot like Dr. Who. Now that was a show!

Film Director Stanley Kubrick asked Pink Floyd is he may use a portion of the track Atom Heart Mother for the sound track to the film: A Clockwork Orange. But the band refused permisson to use it.

I agree that it sounds strangely familiar.  And it may well be that it is very close to something we might remember.  However, as glass-prison points out, one of the things that was heavily influential in PF's sound was film music (i.e., instrumentals), which was one of Roger Waters' passions early on.  And PF did write the all the music for two films ("More" and "The Valley") and contributed three compositions to a third (I forget the name).  Thus, they became very good at writing melodies and "themes" that sounded "familiar" (which is what good film music is supposed to do).

I will do some more research and see if I can come up with something more concrete.  But my guess is: it simply sounds familiar because that is what good instrumental film theme-type music is supposed to do.

mmmm, i don't know for shure, but therīs something in between the previous album "More", this one is actually before Ummagumma, and is a score for a movie... i donīt remember where i read that, but the main title of the song pays tribute to a News headline of those years, iīll try to do a research for these facts

Has anyone tried this: Get the movie Wizard Of Oz and cue the beginning of Speak to Me from DSOTM with the part where the lion jumps out from behind the tree with the sound turned down. It's pretty freaky if you cue it right on. Let it play until the beginning of The Great Gig In The Sky.

I tried that!! it is one of the trippiest things I have ever seen

Did you know that if you play Echoes to the last section of 2001: a space odyssey, the music will seem to synchronize with the trippy landscapes etc. you see at the end. it even ends at the same time the movie does!

VB: Actually, if you start Dark Side from the moment of Leo's second third roar, and let it play twice through, it will provide an absolutely amazing, eerie soundtrack to the entire film.  Way out freaky, as if PF had actually synchronized it that way.

pink Floyds music has been used in some movies such as" ZABRISKIE POINT"(as mentioned by JIM) and the surfing movie "CRYSTAL VOYAGER" Both these movies date from around the time of "ATOM HEART MOTHER"(about 1970) does this help?

Not only that, but WYWH synchs up with the beginning of 2001. I kid you not. Try it, starting the beginning of Shine on with the beginning black screen of the overture (not when the overture ends) You'll see it. There are glaring synch ups like the monkeys finding the obelisk right when Welcome to the Machine starts up. Pretty freaky. Hey, I just found out the topic of my next thread posting.

I thought I read an interview with Waters and Gilmour back in the seventies and they denied it as well as the echoes/2001 connection.
