It would be great to be able to subscribe to threads without receiving email notifications, and be notified through the forum only. Is this possible on the current software?

You misunderstand. Most modern forum software allows for notifications of replies to subscribed threads within the forum, without sending email notifications. I have email notifications turned off in the Control Panel, but if I subscribe to a thread, it sends email notifications. I'd like to be able to subscribe and simply see a list of notifications when I next visit the forum. Here's an example from another music forum:    Is this possible using the current forum software?

I don't think that "Web Wiz Forums" software which is what PA uses (or at least not the free version) has that option available.
I'm not that familiar with RSS readers, but that might help you. Look to the top right top right of the forum page, where one will see "RSS" (CLICK), where one can subscribe to various RSS feeds (I'd be using the google one).
