What are your views regarding Steven Wilson's solo output and which full-length studio album do you prefer? I think 'The Raven That Refused to Sing...' was a real step-up, although Hand. Cannot. Erase.' Has grown on me more of late.

Definitely difficult for me to choose. Maybe Raven, but could be Grace or Hand. Cannot. Erase. 4 & 1/2 is quite special too. Not overly fond of his cover versions or Insurgentes/

Insurgentes still sounds to me like the most original and fresh-sounding thing he put out under his name. The only album of his I would rank as high as my favourite PT albums.

Hand...

He neither drank, smoked, nor rode a bicycle. Living frugally, saving his money, he died early, surrounded by greedy relatives. It was a great lesson to me -- John Barrymore

Tough choice between Hand and Raven. Chose Hand
4 1/2 is also quite good Although, I could take my favorite songs off both albums and make my ultimate SW album.

I really like Steven Wilson's work, except for "To The Bone" which somehow does not resonate with me. I'll give my vote to "Hand Cannot Erase" but it could be either of the others, except for the one I mentioned.

They all have moments, but I really find them a slog to get through these days. I like the man's music much better surrounded by the guys in PT. I wonder what some of the Wilson solo albums would sound like if they had the PT line-up as fully involved bandmates, working the songs up in a collaborative fashion. Would that make them better or not? Is Wilson a better artist with full control or is he better as a bandmate in a more collaborative creative group? |

SW himself has said that he felt Porcupine Tree had run its course and that he wanted to explore musical styles that the other members of PT weren't interested in exploring or playing.

Right. But I was wondering this as a hypothetical, assuming all members were still very interested in being a band. Were that still the case, how would the material on the solo albums have fared? Certainly different, but would they be better, more satisfying, more interesting albums?

It's close but think The Raven by a hair---some of that album really moved me---a little more than Hand.

The Raven for me, followed by Grace for Drowning. Hand Cannot Erase is a little uneven for me... it still has some of the greatness from the previous album, but not all the songs measure up, while Raven was all great. Grace for Drowning was my introduction to Steven Wilson (and Porcupine Tree) and I found it really fresh and beautiful... something different to what I had heard before. Given that I really liked it, I didn't expect so much for The Raven coming out so soon after, but it really ended up being better (though rather different).

I am not quite a SW devotee, but I do like Raven (Luminol is one of my overall favourite tracks from the last years) and Grace for Drowning is also nice to have heard.
