Most of these bands would fall in place behind Rush for me as well as a few others. I don't know Le Orme that well though. I would add Camel to that list too(for me anyway).

Rush is at the top for me currently.  At one time it would have been Supertramp, at another Camel, at even another PFM.  At this time though, I like my music loud, so Rush takes it.

Lot's to choose from in this list. I'm going to through PFM a little love...
He neither drank, smoked, nor rode a bicycle. Living frugally, saving his money, he died early, surrounded by greedy relatives. It was a great lesson to me -- John Barrymore

It's a tie between Camel/ PFM/ Gentle Giant. I like the rest too, all great bands.

can't choose, Camel, Renaissance and Rush make it impossible (LOL).

Grobschnitt? Why not Eloy, Jane, Novalis?

Camel and Magma in the Big Eight
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

No point for me to choose between Magma, Soft Machine or Van der Graaf Generator but I voted for Magma anyway because their huge quantity of quality releases are nearly unmatched. Among the rest I particularly enjoy Gentle Giant, Camel, Caravan and the there-four first albums by each of the italian bands + selected material by the rest.

There are a lot of "Great Big Bands" with "Masterpieces" in and out of this list. What is your definition about "Big Six"? Are we have a common opinion about it? Who said PF or ELP bigger than VDGG or PFM? Bigger or Biggest?! What is your opinion about genres?

^^^ I think it's fairly obvious that Floyd and ELP sold more than VDGG, PFM et al. I'm reading 'Big' as in who shifted the most units. Although, I suppose you cold argue that King Crimson were top of the 'second' divsion, and the likes of Supertramp, Rush and Moody Blues sold more than they did, but whatever..

My fave from the list is Rush, closely followed by VDGG, Supertramp and Moody Blues.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

It's basically down to popularity. "Six most popular 70's progressive rock bands"; which covers how well-known they are/were everywhere, not just the forum here. I don't think we've come to a consensus yet here though LOL

went for Camel as I like quite a few of their albums.  (just shaded it over Rush as I only like their material from 2112 to Signals)

I agree that if you have Grobschnitt you have to have Eloy. But if you mention Jane and Novalis then it opens up a can of worms that would also have to include Hoelderlin, Birth Control, Anyone's Daughter, SFF and on and on. Then there's also the more krautrocky bands like Agitation Free, Neu, Kraftwerk, Can, AD2 etc. Nektar, Strawbs and Gong in particular though seem to be mysteriously absent.

I think Soft Machine is at least on par with all of the 'big six'

For me Gentle Giant should be in the 'big six' of prog. I don't care how, make room for them somehow.. imo.

And where is Barclay James Harvest, or Saga! If this Grobschnitt can make the cut then surely they should.
