All have some very fine moments. Gentle Giant, Renaissance, Banco and Camel are right there after the Big Six for me.

Magma for me. Also love Renaissance, VdGG, Caravan, Moody Blues, Rush & Soft Machine. Like some Camel, Supertramp & Focus too.

I have albums by all of these, and have liked all of these very much. Soft Machine, Van der Graaf Generator, Magma would be my top three methinks, but Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, PFM, and Gentle Giant are up there too. Others I really love on the list too. I can't vote on this right now. I will try to remember to come back and vote for the one that I next play an album by (I am in a Third mood, but also feel like playing VdGG and Magma). Alternately, perhaps if I'm swayed by a particularly convincing-to-me post I will vote for that (that has made up my mind quite a few times as I can be quite impressionable).

There are at least 4 or 5 up there I like about the same...but I'm a big Canterbury fan so it mighty be Caravan...but The Moodies have been one of my favorites from my earliest days.......hard to say.

Gotta be Magma.  They're closely followed by Caravan, VdGG & Le Orme.  Can't vote Soft Machine because that begs the question of WHICH Soft Machine.  Unlike the other bands, changing personnel radically changed direction/style.  I'm much fonder of 1, 2 & Third than I am their later work (even 4) due to the absence of Dada humor.  If based only on 1 & 2, I'd have put them above Magma.

Gotta vote Rush, but it's good to see the Moodies getting some votes. Ditto Camel, a group I've been enjoying a great deal lately. Hopefully, Soft Machine and PFM will get on the board as well.

1 Camel (better than any of the "Big Six")

2 Gentle Giant
3 Rush
4 Renaissance
5 Focus
6 Caravan

The everlasting alternation between Van der Graaf Generator and Gentle Giant … and Magma. I pick VdGG today.

Has to be Rush - in my DNA in the late 70s and early 80s. Didn't even consider them fully prog rock at the time - just an intelligent rock band with great complexity and depth that I happened to cotton onto reasonably early here in the UK on the All the World's a Stage album and tour that year, and pushed onto my school friends like some born-again zealot - although to little effect. Still, they were 'my' band, and I think discovering bands yourself without peers or chart success, is one of the great joys of being a rock fan (all the Big Six I had discovered before them, but they were already successful and well-known)

I like some of these more than probably half of the big six. Today my vote goes to Gentle Giant, but Caravan, Focus, The Moody Blues, Magma and Soft Machine are all big faves for me.
