I guess my all-time top 10 list will be something like this (trying to be diverse):
- Saga - Queen - Camel - Jethro Tull - Barclay James Harvest - Gov't Mule - Eloy - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Ozric Tentacles - Al Stewart 10 examples of good-old AOR-dad-rock. Nothing extraordinairy, but I love it. I used to be a big Marillion fan, but that's basically classic rock/AOR aswell.

Hi, My apologies ... I have something like 432 TOP BANDS ... and I can not do a TOP 10, because I do not have it on account of 432 TOP BANDS. Sorry! I don't really mind this, but I can not help thinking that music is not being heard ... only 10 bands! Thus, all my bands are top 10 or I would not have them! Where do you sit with all your music? In the car with 3 songs? |
||
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Huge Leonard Cohen fan, I might put New Skin For The Old Ceremony just ahead of Songs Of Love And Hate but those two are monstrously good.

I would be a huge fan of ELP, Yes Genesis and Caravan..... But these bands never hit the mark for me, specially Genesis that went poppy on us!!..... ..... Hackett/Phillips era was excellent, were the only members that made Genesis interesting. First 6 ELP albums are brilliant/excellent........ The rest Zzzzzz!.... Gentle Giant is a Hit & Miss for me ... made 2/3 great albums .... IMO |

The first album has really great songs ("One of us cannot be wrong" may be my favourite Cohen song), but sadly some of them are drowned in unnecessary and unfitting sounds and instruments that were added by the producer for all I know (especially "Sisters of Mercy"). Also, while "Songs of LC" is more like a collection of great songs, the Songs of Love and Hate form a consistent album - for example, I can't imagine "Diamonds in the Mine" without "Dress Rehearsal Rag" preceding. That's a real one two gut punch isn't it? Superb. Diamonds in the Mine always makes me want to sing very loud in the shower.

That's an interesting image with the marching band. I still think the album would have been better with just Cohen's voice, Cohen's guitar, and occasional background singers and maybe strings, but if you can enjoy it the way it is, that's great. |
