"We all must wonder, now and then, if things had turned out - well - just plain different.
Chance path taken, page unturned or brief encounter, blossomed, splintered.
Might you have been the man of courage, brave upon life's battlefield,
Captain Commerce, high-flown banker, hedonistic, down-at-heel?
A Puritan of moral fibre, voice raised in praise magnificent?
Or rested in assured repose, knowing your lot in quiet content?

What-ifs, Maybes and Might-have-beens fly
Soft petals on a breeze
What-ifs, Maybes and Might-have-beens
Why-nots, Perhaps and Wait-and-sees!"
“Living in their pools, they soon forget about the sea.”

Where's the float for the gas? How much left does he have? Grab the keys and go; here's another show...

Yes I'm thinking of this, yes I am
Puddletown Tom was the underground
Hold you tighter so close, yes you are
Please hold on to the steel rail

Colonel with gloves
He isn't loved on 'Sunday's Mail'
All the fives crock Henrietta
She's mean go-getter
Gotta write her a letter

Did I wink of this, I am
Yum, yummy, yum, don't, yummy, yum, yom, yom...
Yes, I'm thinking of this, in steam
Skeleton kissed to the steel rail

Fleas in Pamela
Chugging along with a funnel of steam
All the fives crock Henrietta
She's mean go-getter
Gotta write her a letter...

Friede and I made a special edition of "Nursery Cryme" which includes the tracks "Happy the Man" and "Twilight Alehouse". both songs were recorded during the "Nursery Cryme" sessions, but for some reason not included on the album. "Happy the Man" appeared as a single shortly after "Nursery Cryme" came out, but "Twilight Alehouse" much later as b-side of "I Know What I Like"

'Like a fool in a pool I'm wonderfully cool....like a Nun with a gun i'm wonderful fun...  with a grin on my chin i'm certain to win'WinkWink .... My 2 all time favorite Genesis songs!!Clap

I think the version of Twilight Alehouse on the B side of IKWIL was actually recorded during 1972 but it was first written and performed by the band as early as 1969 (the guitar riff actually appears as a 'joining' section between two songs on 'From Genesis to Revelation') and there is a brain melting BBC session version from 1972 and the lovely Belgium TV (Rock of the 70's) version from around early 1971 SmileSmile

"Twilight Alehouse" was allegedly recorded during the "Foxtrot" sessions, but I think this is impossible because of what I call the "aural fingerprint". I will explain what I mean by that.

each album has its own specific sound due to the circumstances during the recording sessions. this is especially so for analogue recordings, but to a certain degree even for digital ones, although less pronounced. each studio has its own acoustic parameters, and even the same studio may have different acoustic parameters at different times. this is well-known by any sound technician. I know for certain that TV sound engineers used to record 3 minutes of silence for shootings to get the sound atmosphere. I don't know if this is still so, but it definitely was in the 70s.

now the "aural fingerprint" of "Twilight Alehouse" happens to match the "aural fingerprint" of "Nursery Cryme" and not of "Foxtrot". hence it was definitely recorded during these sessions
...
have you actually analysed the analogue recordings of these personally or just 'by ear'?

it is kind of funny that you say this because I actually do go "just by ear". I do, however, have perfect pitch, so "just by ear" is putting it a bit in a wrong way.

by the way: you may think perfect pitch is a blessing, but it can be a curse as well. an example: lately it has become quite fashionable to re-release records with A at 432 Hz instead of the usual 440 Hz. you have no idea how horribly wrong this sounds to me

Strange avenues where you lose all sense of direction
And everywhere is Main Street in the winter sun.
The wino sleeps cold coat lined with the money section.
Looking like a record cover from 1971.

And here am I warm feet and a limo waiting.
Shall I make us both feel good?
And would a dollar do?
But in your streets, I have no credit rating
And it might not take a lot to be alone just like you.

Catch a boat to England baby
Maybe to Spain
Wherever I have gone
Wherever I've been and gone
Wherever I have gone
The blues are all the same

Send out for whiskey baby
Send out for gin
Me and room service honey
Me and room service babe
Me and room service
Well we're living a life of sin

When I'm not drinkin' baby
You are on my mind
When I'm not sleepin' honey
When I ain't sleepin' mama
When I'm not sleepin'
You know you'll find me crying

Try another city baby
Another town
Wherever I have gone
Wherever I've been and gone
Wherever I have gone
The blues come followin' down

Livin' is a gamble baby
Lovin's much the same
Wherever I have played
Whenever I've thrown them dice
Wherever I have played
The blues have run the game

Maybe tomorrow honey
Some place down the line
I'll wake up older
Some place down the line
I'll wake up older
So much older mama
I'll wake up older
And I'll just stop all my trying
Catch a boat to England baby,
Maybe to Spain...

Yeah it's been hard, going a long time; and we're together even now
Why do you ask? Surely you know it! Isn't it clear just when and how?

"You can call me a hog-drunken swine
Because I like drinking wine
But I'm really not drunk all the time
I was sober when I made up this rhyme

There's Moonshine in the mountains
And it's going so cheap
So grab yourself a bucket
A still's waters run deep

There's an injun who married a squaw
'Cause her feet, they were size twenty four
I'll tell you what he marridged her for
When you help me get up from this floor

There's Moonshine in the mountains
And it's going so cheap
So grab yourself a bucket
A still's waters run deep

Well the reason this redskin got wed
To his freak-footed bride, like I said
Has completely gone out of my head
Won't you please pass that bottle instead

There's Moonshine in the mountains
And it's going so cheap
So grab yourself a bucket
A still's waters run deep.

I remember it much better now
It had something to do with a cow
She could milk it with one foot and plough
With the other, no that ain't right somehow

There's Moonshine in the mountains
And it's going so cheap
So grab yourself a bucket
A still's waters run deep

I recall that they both came to town
She was wearing a buffalo gown
And the old man, when he saw my frown
Said she's great when she treads them grapes down

There's Moonshine in the mountains
And it's going so cheap
So grab yourself a bucket
A still's waters run deep"

What are your plans for the future now? And did you say who did the writing? How did you get...who gave the name of the band?

"Wounded, Old And Treacherous"

A walk on the quiet side, late in the day --
Don't mean to get in anybody's way.
The Gods seem willing: sun's in the sky.
Old crows cawing as the straight crows fly.
There was a time when love was the law.
There was a time for the tooth and the claw.
Last rites given, no holds barred.
Heaven Express on my credit card.

Now let me draw the jungle line --
I won't cross yours if you don't cross mine.
Won't make trouble, I don't need no fuss.
But I'm wounded, old and I'm treacherous.

I see you shuffle in the courtroom with
Your rings upon your fingers
And your downy little sidies
And your silver-buckle shoes
Playing at the hard case
You follow the example of the comic-paper idol
Who lets you bend the rules...

Bad news, bad news,
Come to me where I sleep,
Turn, turn, turn again.
Sayin' one of your friends
Is in trouble deep,
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind.

Tell me the trouble,
Tell once to my ear,
Turn, turn, turn again.
Joliet prison
And ninety-nine years,
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind. Oh whats the charge

Of how this came to be,
Turn, turn, turn again.
Manslaughter
In the highest of degree,
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind.

I sat down and wrote
The best words I could write,
Turn, turn, turn again.
Explaining to the judge
I'd be there on Wednesday night,
Turn, turn to the rain
And the rain.
