Fan of both, like most here - but would have to just go for classic period Genesis compared classic period Yes - but very close. Both have had their share of lows since the end of the 70's, although Yes have had the occasional highlight since then.

Itīs Yes to me. Genesis best albums are better than Yes best albums, but Yes hasnīt made such a horrible album as Calling All stations is. And Yes eighties were much better than Genesis.

Genesis would be my #1 if Close to The Edge didn't exist. That alone (and Relayer) puts Yes as the top band.
Although, Genesis DID have a stronger track record of essential albums vs Yes, etc. Close to The Edge is just godly. Selling England by The Pound is ALMOST perfect if it weren't for "More Fool Me". Record is still 5 star despite this track!

Although for me both bands are not Top 5 or so, I like them both, and by and large this would be pretty much of a draw in terms of their musical output, but I can connect somewhat better to Genesis, which is largely Steve Hackett's merit. Also Yes have a certain tendency to show off that dips the balance against them, which is not to deny that I'm often mightily impressed by what they have to show.

VERY close to mine. Zappa has recently just edged out Gentle Giant for that 3 spot. Otherwise we're exactly the same.
Although for me Yes and Genesis sometimes switch places.

You still have my favorite username on these forums, btw. GeneYes would be another good one .
Yes, Gentle Giant, Genesis for me. You can't go wrong! I definitely have my Zappa swings a couple times a year. Grand Wazoo and One Size Fits All.

Haha, that would've been great. And yeah Grand Wazoo and One Size Fits All just might be his two best albums. Though he has so MANY good ones. Overnight Sensation, Hot Rats, Waka Jawaka, Sheik Yerbouti, Absolutely Free, Burnt Weeny Sandwich.. Too many lol, he's just awesome.

However, the closest to being a 5 star album for me would be Selling England, but Battle of Eping Forest just ruins it. On the other hand, Yes does have Fragile and Close to the Edge, which for me are the pinnacle of prog.

^I love Battle of Epping Forest. It brings harmony to my inner Genesis fan and my inner Zappa fan.

Epping is one of my fave genesis songs
|
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Laughing so hard because I agree 100% about Genesis ruining perfection with a single bad track each record...but I just fell in love with Epping Forest and it's one of my faves now! I've been playing and singing it all damn week. "A pin up GURU every week!" "More Fool Me" is the track that ruins it's perfection for me.
I agree about Close to The Edge/Fragile being at the head of the prog table.

For their entire catalog it goes to Yes. For complete uniqueness I'd opt for Genesis from Trespass through to Wind & Wuthering.
