I think these are easily two different guitarists as well as focus of music. Agreed that Stolt plays and has written music that is very upbeat, happy mood, loving music.
Wilson on the other hand is about as dark/melancholy as you can get with both solo and PT material. Stolt is a much better guitarist easily, but that has nothing against Wilson as he himself admits he is not that good, of course I don't know what he thinks the bar is for guitar players. Wilson plays drums, bass, keys/synth/mellotron as well as electric and acoustic guitar, not too shabby....Plus he is a brilliant music editor/mixer/engineer.
Both have their merits and create excellent music.

What's also funny is how this thread keeps resurfacing when this little back-n-forth happened over ten years ago and that both of these gentlemen since then have moved on. Still like Samuel I also find it a little peculiar to see Steven knock the retro approach when he himself went down that road not that long after. He may have gone for the cool Crimsonian touch whilst Stolt always sticks to his butter symph...but he isn't fooling anyone.

That may very well be it! Maybe we need more vs threads - proggers that talk sh*t about each other - maybe a little mud wrestling with all the Steves of prog.
