These are my all time favourite bands in chronological order in regards to when they formed:
The Beatles
The Kinks
Jethro Tull
King Crimson
Wishbone Ash
Focus
Gentle Giant
Horslips
Japan
The Cure
Skids
Simple Minds
Magazine
Echo and the Bunnymen
Big Country
The Armoury Show
Living Colour
Radiohead
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci
Mogwai
Arctic Monkeys

I took a few liberties.....21 instead of 10!

Presently, I am really getting into the Welsh band Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. Might have to suggest they get included into either Prog folk or Eclectic Prog. They are (were) amazing...pop tendencies with lots of Prog interspersed IMHO. Their 1997 album Barafundle is brilliant.

Anyone share my love of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci?

Tull definitely number 1. So many good extra stuff that missed albums. You can tell they we're trying to sound pop on the warchild and too old soundtracks. Would have been much better if they used their other tracks on those
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I like how Mozart is randomly there, lol

But if I was to include classical composers (who obviously aren't bands), my list would be in the 300s, haha

As far as classical music goes for me, Mozart is in front and everyone else is waving at him in the rear-view mirror.

I should have added Stravinsky.
When I first heard Rite of Spring I dubbed him the Heavy Metal of classical music

I'm assuming prog or prog related, right? In that case, again, in no particular order:

Genesis
King Crimson
Birds and Buildings
Anglagard
Opeth
Frank Zappa
Yes
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Anekdoten
Taal

But if we start talking beyond prog, that's gonna look very different.

But classical music and metal coexist, both still innovating in the 21st century? Confused

Of course, but heavy metal was just a few years away ;) from existing when Stravinsky composed Rite of Spring
