Kant Freud Kafka - Onirico

This is an amazingly thick and beautiful album. Its in Crossover but feels way more Symph or Eclectic.

It needs alot more synthesizer landscapes (which I agree are the best part of the album, particularly the end of the 9 min track) and alot less pop debt. But after childhood's end I suppose an album like this can't be too unexpected.

You're a complicated man Phil and I kinda like it that way. I have still to figure out just how your fancy can be tickled sonically.
Childhood's End was bad I certainly agree on that - their melancholic sombre and slightly sterile sound did not suit the old school hippie tunes they were revamping...not even slightly. Here though I find the same characteristics mimicking the coldness and slightly dark romantic post-punk vibe of the 80s compliments the straightforwardness of the tunes. Still there are some clever bits and pieces throw in there making this much more of an art-pop record with emphasis on the synth.
To me personally it reminds me of Perdition City run through Japan (the band). The complsitions though remind me of Shadows Of The Sun which, as I recall, you rate highly?

I find it lacks depth as well. Honestly, I have yet to find any of their output I can't do without.

^ totally does. the near constant simple drumming is another huge negative as well. the more I type the more I dislike it!

Also, I do quite love Ulver. In terms of things I can't do without...definitely their debut and A Quick Fix Of Melancholy EP ...Blood Inside is very close as is Svidd Neger. Really though, most of their albums contains at least a handful of quite excellent + moments for me.

Not sure what is happening in Norway and particularly Bergen but I can't keep up... Apollon Records have released a plethora of new albums (Werserbergeland, Pixie Ninja and so on) - a lot of names connected to acts such as Wobbler, White Willow, Panzerpappa etc. contribute.

Lots of listening to do!

All the nonsense albums I sifted through last year to come up with an AOTY list and somehow completely overlooked Bent Knee. Just played the last 2 albums. Probably wouldn't have bumped my #1's each respective year, but definitely top 5.

It's funny how we hesr these things because Shadows Of The Sun is one of the lesser albums imo and I far prefer the new one.
I'd love to hear another Messe or perhaps an alphabet album in the krautrock vein but then again as cool as that would be, I still prefer Ulver doing their own thing. Their new 'pop' album reeks of atmosphere, melodies, synths and experimentation - the more I listen the more I pick up. It's not experimental like Terrestrials was but experimental within a pop framework.

I listened to it yesterday on bandcamp based on Kavus' reco (he has great taste in music), will definitely be buying.

Less than a week after Prescott and I have another new release that I expect to be one of my favourites of the year, Penguin Cafe's The Imperfect Sea.
