Proto-Prog-Metal,that sums up Rush rather nicely. A sort of precursor to Queensryche and Dream Theater. Good definition!

They are not a prog-rock band, they hardly are a rock band.I can't stand the vocals of Geddy Lee,i don't appreciate the intellectual style they think they have,i could have been much less polite but.....anyway i hope they would have borned in 2112 or in any era after my death.

I know that many people hate Rush passionately so maddog expresses a feeling that's very common outside of our little prog fraternity.

I'm not voting. What stupid choices.
Counterparts, their worst album. I'm sat here mouth, open in disbelief.
Presto the start of their decline?? You have too be joking. Presto is
fantastic.
I know that everyone is entitled to their opinions but aye karamba.

Like Elvis then?

Exactly like Elvis, but with talent, musical ability, song writing ability, intelligence and integrity..
Nothing like Elvis then, I guess..

Have you checked out the band? Syzygy, that is. |
I have one song of theirs on my comp, off of their recent release MOTH... its not bad! They're very ELPish (no, i didn't say elvish, you silly prog geeks).
Syzygy.... if you say "Sizzle G" quickly then that almost does it.
|
MOTH is good, but they have more aspects then ELP to their sound. Actually, most of the album is instrumental.

IT TOOK A VERY SICK PERSON TO COME UP WITH THE ELVIS IS DEAD PART OF THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How could you ruin the memory of Elvis by describing his death in such a sick, demented and vulgar way?

Maybe a bit of tangent, but I know what I mean.

I like Rush a lot. I would go so far as to say they are my favorite band. But I wouldn't go so far as to say they are pure prog. There first album was nothing but hard rock. There was not an inkling of progressive music on that record. They reached there progressive peak on either A Farewell to Kings or Hemispheres. Starting on Permanent Waves they started doing New Wave stuff with occasional progressive bits and odd meters on about half of their songs. Since then, they have become less and less progressive and more and more mainstream. That is my statement, if anybody cares. They started becoming very pop rock around Roll the Bones and Counterparts.

Aieeeeeeeee. What is the matter with you people. Pop rock?? Counterparts?? It's the heaviest of all their albums.
If you want to argue it's the least progressive, then OK I'll go along with that, but pop??. You have to be kidding me.

lol, thats Rush in a can for ya.
proto-prog-metal? honestly people. don't you think we spend a little
too much time labeling things? The music is what it is, call it hard
rock, call it prog. Even a harsh cynic must concede that, as mentioned
above, there are definitely some, if not many, progressive elements to
their music. Pieces like Xanadu, Cygnus (I and II) and 2112 are
undeniably influenced by progressive rock. Is the band still prog?
Maybe not, but multitudes of one time prog bands moved on to other
musical styles.

Counterparts is the album that got me to start listening again. I lost interest for awhile after hearing Hold Your Fire.

King Crimson were (and still are) much more heavier and progressive than Rush.

Well if you call that cacophony of noise, music maybe so. On the other hand if you want actual tunes then Rush are heavier (but not neccesarily prog)
