Its perfect. I "know" all the words that are outed but only isolated phrases such as: down at the end, round by the corner... & seasons will pass you by... sticks or stand out. Nothing wrong with that as long as: and rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace (actually I'm fine with that as well, but you know what I''m getting at) is merely the sound of the human voice.
I normally don't know the meaning of any lyrics (except a selected few by Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Roy Harper) including lyrics I claim to love. Pantagruel's Nativity, Hibou Anemone and Bear, Impressione di Settembre and Mother Sky all sound equally amazing and "deep" to me... well, if anything PFM has the advantage as I understand much less.

Close is cool and dark is overdramatic nonsense
|
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I just voted for Close to the Edge.
Neither one is probably my favorite by each band though. For Yes I think I prefer relayer(although it's probably close(no pun intended))and for Floyd I probably prefer wish you were here and maybe one or two others.
I actually kind of think CTTE is the new dark side of the moon. For years DSOTM was considered the bench mark the "big one" but these days CTTE seems to have gained a lot of fan and critical momentum and dare I even say it has a pretty strong cult following now.

Classical music isn't dead, it's more alive than it's ever been. It's just not on MTV.

This is where I am. When I listen to Yes I try to forget the English language. At least on CTTE the lyrics are essentially meaningless on a literal level. It's when Jon Anderson makes his meaning quite clear that you really need to reach for the sick bag. Not coincidental that most of my favourite prog albums are instrumental or have lyrics in languages I don't understand. God spare me from having to listen to some halfwit's idea of profundity over the length of a "concept album".

CttE, I guess. Not a big fan of either band, or the albums in question, so if these were my alternatives to take with me to a desert island I think I'd rather go without music tbh.

I kind of hate to say it but if this was not a prog site CTTE would not stand a chance. Dark side would win and do so by a huge margin. I looked this up online and in general(not counting prog sites)at least 90 percent prefer DSOTM. I think it's worth mentioning that at least some of those people don't know Yes very well(if at all).

I'm surprised TDSotM has SO many votes in this comparison. Excellent production and innovative importing of ambient sounds aren't enough to overcome massive, I mean MASSIVE advantage in composition. And I guess it should be the most important here.
I'd rather have an extended play with Close to the Edge title track alone than The Dark Side (which is still very important piece of rock music, I'm no hater).

Umm, yeah? Kind of goes without saying. Does anyone actually think that Yes is more popular than Pink Floyd among the general populace?

No not unless they are delusional. Go to your local high school and take a poll. I bet out of 500 students about 495 have at least heard of Pink Floyd. Maybe 100 of them(if we are lucky) have even heard of Yes.
