Topic: Opinions on a potential prog band name Posted: July 15 2016 at 20:10
Hello all,
So my band is getting ready to record our first album within the upcoming week. At first we were a small student group performing for my senior project at college. Reforming almost a year after we graduated, we've spent the last few months rehearsing and smoothing out the rough edges. We go in the studio during the last week of July, and as you might imagine, I'm both excited and nervous!
In terms of the band name though, I am at a bit of a loss. The first few band names I thought of were apparently taken when I googled them. However, the group's baritone guitarist and myself were chatting on the phone one night and somehow the phrase 'Indifferent Nature' came up in the phrase. I thought that would serve as a proper band name, and so far it isn't taken, as far as I'm aware.
So what do you all think of Indifferent Nature as a band name? It's definitely not a bubblegum pop band name, nor is it the bleakest metal band name either (at least I think). Given that 4 of the 5 songs have somber undertones creating most of the album's atmosphere, I think it may work well.
Any thoughts or comments are welcome. Thanks for reading, and more posts on this prog-ject will be on the way!

It's not good. Too literal, too retro, and not the punk-like message you probably want to send. Maybe try something unexpected, like 'John Mayer Sucks' (or something you wouldn't be sued over). Band-naming isn't easy, so good luck.

Yeah you're right on the naming part, it isn't easy at all. I appreciate the feedback, although I wasn't really going for a punk-rock vibe. Thanks for responding!

^ Research-- listen and look for words or phrases you like or that fit your sound, anything; science, animals, plants, history, religion, people, movements, words themselves, or even music -

Any advice for making a unexpected band name then?
hmmm... good timing. I've been away from the site for some time.
I am the forum guru on cool band names
you want something with some pizazz.. something that sticks in a listeners mind. We get new bands here all the time. The ones that get checked out more often that not.. the ones that have that 'it' factor. Remember we are an ADHD society.. especially musically...
go with something that will make people take notice...
my personal favorite...
Cheeto Jesus... If I was young and still in the game. I'd form a band just to snag that band name.
hell you could do a concept album right out of the gate on that motif...

What about just 'Indifference' or 'Indifferent'?
Indifferent and Indifference is actually the name of a metalcore band and an indie band both in the UK. Just type in either name followed by band and you'll see.

Slowly but surely, I'm starting to lean towards the name Indifferent Nature. After discarding some potentially awful names (like Alloy) or discovering that other names had been taken (Sentinel, Emporium etc), I think this would be a step in the right direction. Even the other band members tell me that they can tell I have my heart set on this band name, so yeah.... Recording and producing time is getting closer, as is the naming process too.

If I were in the band, I wouldn't be fond of "indifferent." You might as well say something like "We're apathetic about this music, but here it is anyway."
Have you tried random word generators to at least get ideas? Look for one where you can specify parts of speech and relative obscurity versus commonality of the words, or at least where you can set the number of syllables, etc.
Try to pick something that fits the music, the band's image (or whatever image you want to shoot for), your personalities, etc.
For example, if you were doing something Floyd-like (a la later Floyd), "Mellowtron" wouldn't be a bad name.
