I missed this post for some odd reason. This recording is incredibly lyrical and brings out the beauty in the score; though not a dynamic as previous recordings by Karajan, that doesn't bother me in the slightest. Recommended.

Interesting. That 80s cycle usually gets kind of trashed, except for the Eroica.

Can anyone recommend me a symphony (or some if you insist)? I'm looking for something which is very interesting regarding composition and arrangement, hopefully the sheets are findable on the internet. I'd like something very classical or maybe post-romantic if it's not too hard to get into. Not really familiar with any symphonies yet except Mozart 40 and Beethoven 5, so you can probably name up a lot of good suggestions!

Sorry, somehow, I had not come across your post above until just now..as far as very classical goes, I would recommend the other two late Mozart Symphonies, Nos. 39 and 41, truly astounding. Also, as far as post romantic goes, what comes to mind immediately is Shostakovich Symphonies 5 and 10.

Yet, if I were to recommend anything at all, it would be the last three symphonies of the late romantic composer Anton Bruckner, Nos. 7,8 and 9. Words cannot convey the immense meaning and purpose these works hold for me. They are monumental and Bruckner is the true inheritor of Beethoven's symphonic mantle.

I also would like to tip my hat to Gustav Mahler, an immensely important and pivotal symphonist, whose 6, 7, and 9th Symphonies, especially, are incredible experiences, though pretty mammoth for someone who is just delving into symphonies. Maybe, for you, in time.

Must get Beethoven symphonies (besides 5) are 3, 6, 7, and 9.
