Vander has said that he employed a made-up language because he was more interested in the sounds than the meanings of words (the vocals are another instrument). Imagine how different French sounds than the rather Teutonic sounding Kobaian. Maybe because I mostly listen to instrumental music (and music with lyrics in languages that I don't speak), and rarely pay attention to lyrics outside of folk music, I have no problem with his choice. Maturity is not the issue when it comes to preferring one of these bands over the other. I loved Rush when I was teenager hanging out with the zonked kids at school who parked at the back of the school (true), and now as a zonked out middle-aged man who parks in front of a computer screen I prefer Magma. My tastes changed, but I wouldn't call myself more mature now than I was then, just older and more zonked out.

Can't stand Can, big fan of the other four. Gave it careful consideration, but in the end.... I guess I'm just another hoser, eh?

I don't agree that one's preference shows more maturity over the other, and do wish that people would communicate with other more respectfully. Respect our differences. Just because Avant Prog is good for me does not mean that it should be good for you. I think it's immature to be condescending to people based on such tastes. I know people would look down on Prog fans generally for their tastes. It's fine, I think, to state what you don't like something, but not to insult another for liking it (PA does not tolerate personal attacks, so if you ever feel personally attacked, please report to an admin). One thing, though, we almost all have commonalities in musical interests here, but sometimes the differences become apparent because more biting remarks are made. An aside, but to me that Vander chose to make up a language does not render the music itself any less sensical than if it was instrumental, in a real language that I don't know, scatted, or, say, from a group like Yes than can use language in odd ways. Maybe Vander was uncomfortable trying to come up with thoughtful lyrics, but the point for me is that the sound of the vocals make sense in relation to the sound of the music. French might not have worked so well to get the right tone, and I wouldn't expect him to try to write in English to make it more readily understandable to us Anglophones. Anyway, I hope you stick around, for me it's a brilliant site and there should be room for all tastes (provided perhaps that they are not too perverse). If people feel that they are being pushed out due to intolerant opinions and are being attacked for their tastes, then that is a serious matter to look into. We should be quite an inclusive community, and I don't like us or them mentalities. There is so much common ground that we all share though sometimes it takes stepping out of our comfort zones to be appreciative of a lot of it. Edited by Logan - April 20 2016 at 15:59 |

And me too, if you're ever in my neck of the woods (near Vancouver, BC), I'll get you a brewski and torture you with Art Zoyd, and if I'm ever in your neck of the woods, you can buy me a brewski and I'll put up with Bon Jovi (actually, you'd better make it a case of brewskis). ![]() |

- I'd say a made up language makes real sense for a band whose whole concept left earth on their album debut and takes place on another planet. And the kobaïan lyrics actually makes perfect sense as well. I guess what intruder wrote wasn't the most polite but it was obviously based on something he and many others has experienced. The comment wasn't directed to you but you were still offended. Where I come from the dopeheads and loosers listened to Gabriel era-Genesis, Rainbow and Frank Zappa etc. well into the 80's. Who Cares? If you feel personally attacked or insulted because someone writes something negative about your favorite band-or their fans you're the one with the problem. |

Well said. ![]() I love prog, but not all the avant-garde stuff. I love Bjork, but she's the only one I'd classify as avant-garde of what I listen to. Rush, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd, Yes and many space rock bands are my favorite prog bands.

I certainly do not want Scott to leave....he and I are the only uneducated, immature, childish, zonked out, pimple face pot smokers who listen to Rush on this site
![]() What I like about forums is they force you into taking a break from forums and the idiotic world of the www. Scott, just take a break from this place and go to Xanadu for awhile........I'll be the zonked out guy in the car behind The Trees listening to my cassette tapes in the car

I like all those bands, but I'd have to go with VdGG. Can is a close second, though- any band that makes an album as good as Future Days is high up in my book.

No Rush not gonna win not on my watch! VdGG all the way! :D Rush is a nice litle band but dont come close to the epic grandios prog overlords that is the mighty Van der Graaf Generator.

It's obviously gonna be between VDGG and Magma. I will not cast any favour in any direction between these 2. I love what Hammill does and I equally love what Vander does.
I love Can with all my heart, Gryphon are cool, and Rush, whilst never providing me with my musical fulfilment, stands as is. Love them all, some more than others, but impossible between VDGG and Magma. I just don't want to sell my soul to either......................sharing is caring............ |

Don't like Rush, haven't listened to Gyrphon yet, like a little Can, Own a few VDGG albums so they are solid, but I have recently begun to listen to Magma (like four days ago recently) and they are incredible. So Magma gets my vote as of now.
