I was going to originally post this a couple weeks ago during Sabotage's 40th Anniversary, but I missed that.

In any event, what are your thoughts on Sabotage? For me, it's a toss up between this and Paranoid for Sabbath's best record.

This is my favourite Sabbath album!

I'll go with The Writ, although it could be Hole in the Sky and Megalomania if you asked me another day.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

^Pretty much how I feel, although I voted for Megalomania. -A tune that so effectively conveys it's title it's uncanny. I think there was a bit of megalomania going on during the recordings too - I remember reading an interview with Tony describing just how long it took making Sabotage compared to what had gone before.
My fave Sabbath record is still the debut though...but I adore everything up to and including this magnificent record. Happy 40th!!

Side One: The greatest half of music Sabbath ever did.
Side Two: They went out to tea in the afternoon, got three or four 8 balls of coke and several fifths of Jack and came back to the studio several hours later completely f*cked up.

Not my favourite Sabbath. Prefer the debut, Vol 4 and SBS.

Symptom of the Universe is my fave track on it.

I believe Sabotage to have been withheld from release as soon as recording of it was completed, thus quashing the momentum gained from the success of SBS.

^ Actually, I think the recording itself was also delayed. IIRC, sometime around the second half of 1974, Sabbath became mired in management issues and it continued when they were finally able to get into the studio.

The legal issues bean here. Sharon's old man was their manager. There may be trouble ahead....

Symptom's the highlight of a pretty good album. Insane is Ozzy at his loud, flat and unappealing worst. And this was the single, or considered to be.

Album? Probably Master Of Reality (metal wise- any of the first 3) or Sabbath Bloody Sabbath prog metal wise but Wheels of Confusion from Vol 4 is my sort of pop tune. Sad that album has Changes on it. Sabbath does Elton John. No, don't think so... but then there is Supernaut and the rest...

Very ambitious and quite dense album. Interesting ideas like Supertzar. I really like it except for Ozzy's vocal on Insane. They probably should have got the drummer to sing that. Bill's got quite a good ballad baritone. I think that's his vocal on Swinging The Chain on Never Say Die. Now there's a brave album. loads of chances taken in a dicey contemporary music world.

Who voted for "Don't Start (Too Late)" ? Not a bad track, that is, eh, eh !!

8th vote for Symptom is mine. I prefer "Over To You" , my all time fav Sabbath tune, but here's Iommi's power guitar tone... In Symptom I view motorcycled hippies with their fringed leather jackets emptying their messy minds in dusty desert rides. If there's a talent in lengthening and celebrating teenage-like rebellion and making something sublime out of it, it's there.

I went for "The Writ". Never heard Ozzy sound so pissed off as he does on that. And there's quieter sections in the piece.
The album cover is even worse than the cover of "Paranoid", but it's 70's era Sabbath. You really can't go wrong with any of them! (well ok, maybe "Technical Ecstasy")

My least fave of the 70's Sabbath albums...except for Symptom which is possibly the most evil riff Tony ever came up with Evil Smile

"Sabotage" is one of my favourite Sabbath albums. The only song I don't really like is "Am I Going Insane". It sounds like they tried to do some radio-friendly material which doesn't go well with the other tracks.
