If I have to choose only one, then it's Pink Floyd. The one I have to come back to regularly, and always remember why I love them so much when I do so. Their music is just something else. Otherwise, I actually have a list of 5 bands/artists that I could consider my very favourites of all, but which I won't mention because of the OP's request. By the way, Valarius, it seems people need to be reminded in this thread about the only one band mentioned, there have been too many slipping on the last posts.

If it wasn't for the Beatles, there would be no prog.

Hardly.
Progressive means going forward or onward, passing successively from one series to the next, proceeding step by step. That is exactly what the Beatles did with each new album. They were a huge influence on all the musicians who formed progressive bands in the late 60s and early 70s.

Though I wouldn't put them with Yes, Crimson or Genesis, they did some amazing music. Sadly they're more known because of their later work. But their earlier albums were great.

I'm gonna copy Necrotica and add a top 10. But the answer the topic creator is looking for is YES.
1-YES 2-Angra 3-Megadeth 4-Genesis 5-Dream Theater 6-ELP 7-King Crimson 8-Primus 9-The Beatles 10-L'arc en Ciel

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

Gosh, I remember Planxty as well! Listened to a lot of folk during the 1980s prog desert. So, Genesis 1975 would include 'Trick of the Tail' as it was recorded that year?
