Hello Progarchives members!
Mike here from Tributary Music Label.
Hope you all are having an enjoyable holiday season.
We wanted to introduce ourselves (or re introduce ourselves) for those not familiar with our boutique label now located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
On an uptick, we recently received an "endowment of the arts" that has enabled us to pick up again and fund some new projects after not being particularly active in recent times. The file sharing craze a few years back, I suppose, did a disservice to us and probably many other labels and artists, so we have been a bit tentative to fully embrace the internet paradigm which has of course changed how most everything is done.
In recent years we have been focusing more on local developments and supporting the communities that have supported us.
That being said, we have some interesting projects in the pipe and a newly constructed studio in the San Francisco Bay Area enabling us to further develop various ambitions.
One of our main objectives has always been to work outside of the typical "band only" format often exploring unique collaborations with others in the artistic fields such as dancers, choreographers, poets, theater groups, photographers, film makers, painters, sculptors etc.
Results can be mixed, sometimes wonderful, other times more challenging.
I'll kick off with a collaboration of new music by "Art Rock Circus" and South African painter Teddy Fisher who wanted to work with the group after seeing them perform at a show earlier this year. The images are all taken from segments of one painting then collaged into this short music film. Much of it was written first on sheet music, then rehearsed and finally performed live while Teddy was painting along to the music. Four or five takes were recorded, with this being what the band felt was the most compelling. The painting was then presented a month or so later.
Drummer Nolan Stolz and keyboardist Brook Hansen flew out to California for the sessions to play with John and Kelton.

Some never before seen photos from "Heavens Cafe' Live"
John Miner's Rock Opera was staged in Las Vegas in July of 1996. This year will be the 20th anniversary
It's hard to believe that much time has passed!
Over the years there have been countless inquires about a DVD or video release of the production cast.
We decided not to do that because it really was meant to be a live theater experience. The rock opera was captured by a three camera video shoot, but video does not fair so well in a dark theater. The music we felt could stand on it's own and it surely has. We have been discussing doing something for a 20th anniversary celebration. It might be a documentary with footage, interviews etc. We may post some song clips of the show on our youtube page with the footage for a select few songs.
Here are some scrap book images from the original Las Vegas cast supporting the 10th track "The Dark Part 1"

Highway 13 by Art Rock Ensemble
This song was a commissioned piece for the Department of Forestry Festival (The Visions of the Wild) 50th year celebration of The Wilderness Act. Pretty cool for the guys to be paid to play a song in 13/8 time signature. The promoter loved the band and put them in the headlining slot, ahead of all the current popular genres. The band played 6 songs with the last one called "Snake" that brought the house down. It featured an exotic belly dancer backed by the band playing in an Indian style trance. Will post that one soon as well.
The Ensemble only performs live and is not yet recording albums by choice. A lot of improvisation with the focus on "you have to be there to experience it".
