Topic: Your opinion on Pawn Hearts Posted: May 05 2015 at 17:29 |
I've noticed, there are a lot of controversial points about this album. While some see it as the artistic peak of VDGG, others think of it as excessive and unlistenable. Who do you think?

Best VDGG album (alongside with Godbluff & Still Life), one of the finest creations of prog-rock

I would go for a fourth option: not perfect, but definitely worthy to be mentioned among the highlights of progressive rock. "Lemmings" is one of the strongest opening tracks in prog, and the slower, moodier pace of "Man-Erg" provides a nice contrast. On the other hand, "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" starts out great, but the chaotic middle section loses the plot somewhat, and is not one of the band's finest moments (in my opinion, of course).

While I personally prefer Still Life, this is a great album - one of the finest ever created by a prog band - and absolutely essential to any prog collection.

The epitome of prog rock.
Always an enjoyable listen.
Somehow always makes me grin listening to it. Something that a lot of classic albums stopped doing a while ago.
Props to the boys.

How does everyone think Lighthouse Keepers holds when compared to other classic-era epics?

Really good album, but really overrated.

I would offer my negative opinion, but Barbu would get mad at me.

When it is good, it is really wonderful, but it's got some moments I don't really care much about, so I don't really think any of this options sound right for me. Man-Erg is a really wonderful songs, and half of Lighthouse Keepers too... but the other half is just too noisy, and then the new melodies just aren't as great as the first ones. Lemmings I don't really care about.

Imma go with the second option. The best for me is definetly H to He and it gets a little boring towards the middle of APOLK. But a really great listen in general.

One of the best albums, but not VdGG's best. That would be Godbluff.

Option #1. Probably in my top 10. Brimming with creativity.
Graphomaniac ... I gotta laugh. Who does that?

One of the finest creations of prog rock, but not the best VDGG album (IMO that is Least We Can Do is Wave) Therefore no vote, as none of the options apply.

Option #2 fits this album very well. Man-erg is one of my favourite VdGG songs, Lemmings is quite good (I prefer the excellent Metropolis Studios version), A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers just average and their first proof that long epics are not their strongest side.
Still Life > Godbluff > H to He > A Grounding in Numbers > Pawn Hearts
