Bugger I'm going to have vote against one of ELP's finest. This is going to be a rout unfortunately.

Love all 3 - I will lean towards ELP in this case - Rush has the tightness and incredible production, Generale has that typical Italian touch, ELP has the outright 'balls' on this amazing track - love how it veers from the heavy fuzz-bass and Hammond assault, to a lovely piano/jazzy interlude, and back again. Simply outstanding. Like a smidge over the others.

Too bad PFM's song is so overlooked. Actually, not worse than other listed songs.

^ No-one said it's inferior, just most of us 'prefer' the other 2 tracks.

My friend, I'm sure that would be the case. One of my personal faves is Per Un Amico. I listen to them more than Rush.
I first discovered ELP before I knew PFM. I listen to ELP more than Rush. I probably spend more ear time with PFM than Rush. But that first track off the first album, that I first heard back in 1987 - a little time before Rush and PFM entered my ears, it's hard not to vote for them. Nothing wrong with Generale ! though. And the Per Un Amico version is superior to the Photos Of Ghosts version.

Thank you for your detailed explanation. I like Per Un Amico version better, as well.

These are all good instrumentals, but the version you suggest is my favourite.

Interestingly, both The Barbarian and YYZ  feature the tritone interval quite prominently (augmented fourth for the academics in our midst) Is this maybe why the poll maker associated them together (albeit subliminally?)
Adore all three tracks hugely but voted for The Barbarian as it's probably the pivotal reason I started listening to Prog in the first place. (and Bartok is slumming it even in this esteemed company)
