Could someone explain to me how John Bonham is revered so much ??? None of his drumming in Zep strikes me as any better than the likes of Ginger Baker, Aynsley Dunbar or Nick Mason ???    
I mean, what is it he does that so many folks find amazing ?? Yes, I agree he's excellent, but not much chop compared to many others.........

^Bonham was a beast behind the kit. He and Moon defined rock drumming imo.

^ Yes, ROCK drumming. Still, there are hundreds of other drummers that technically surpass him. This is the angle I'm approaching this from. Bonzo is good, just like Moon, but give me Dunbar any day to these guys.

I don't know Dunbar because presumably he played in a band I don't listen to. This is perhaps the major point as Led Zep and The Who are bands that had great songs so the music is what I listen to and the respective drummers fit the music perfectly. I do agree though that in prog there are probably many better ALTHOUGH tha said I have not heard anything better than Baba O'Riley. To me that nailed prog not just rock drumming. Moon could do it all!

Moon nailed it spot-on, no doubt. He was a 'natural'. Great, instinctive player.
What I know of Dunbar - he played with Journey, Zappa, Jefferson Starship and Whitesnake. His work, at least within the 'Rock' mode, is fantastic. More technical than both Moon and Bonzo for my taste.

Buddy Rich from that list! As for younger generation, has to be Harry Hughes (Clouds); he gave lessons to Carl Palmer and Bill Bruford too!
