welcome to the forum Yngwie_Satriani. I take it you're a Hendrix, Townsend Fan aswel?
I prefer Symphony X over DT any time of the day. (although the first is very much influenced by the latter). I find Dream Theater to clinical. SymX has more raw emotion and heart in it (Just my opinion of course)

I would say SymphonyX, i have all their studio albums and some of Dream THeatres, based on listening to them i would say SX definetly. Dream THeatre are a talented band though. You a fan of Stratovarius?

Long live progression.

I'm not big on either, but I'd have to say Symphony X by a little bit.

DREAM THEATER BLATENTLY
symphony X have too many references to dream theater that cant be coincidental
1. dream theater put their logo in all of their artwork and then symphony x did the same
2. they dress/appear like exactly the same way
3. their album artwork is too similar (V by SX is blatently taken from awake)
4. their riffs sound too similar and their style and vocal range
i like both bands but dream theater excell over symphony x and are much more original. i doubt symphony x would be the same if there was no dream theater

I'd be a hell of a lot more concerned with the similarities of SyX's "V" and Spock's Beard's "V".

everyone says DT are cheesy but that gets eliminted when you listen to lets say the divine wings of tragedy album. SX have too much cheese in their music for me so it knocks them down a peg. DT made symphony X and DT will always have the upperhand

Haven't heard SX, but I would like to add Shadow Gallery and Vanden Plas
(also perhaps Threshold) to the comparison, both being a bit similar to DT.
At the moment I would rank Vanden Plas over DT because they make IMO
mostly better songs, have better vocalist (at least way less irritating) and do
not have that intrusmental masturbation, which is a bit over the top for DT.
About Shadow Gallery I am not sure, maybe they are equal to DT in my eyes
and ears.

Symphony X
Much more progressive, more emotional, and less pretentiously technical... and what's best, really EPIC.

I prefer Symphony X as well, Michael Romeo is a god at guitar tapping, and doesn't draw out his solos like Petrucci.
