I enjoy listening to Pink Floyd much more than I do Yes.
I own several albums by Yes (6) and have tried more than once to develop a lasting relationship with those LPs. But it never went beyond the courting stage. To this day I can put on a Pink Floyd album and not even consider taking it off until side two has finished.

If I try to look at both bands objectively (I am a huge fan of both) from a progressive point of view then Yes would win the contest. Arguably, Floyd had gone as far as they could by 'Dark Side' whereas Yes still had 'Tales' and 'Relayer' up their sleeves. That said, Floyd were 'progressive' long before Yes hit their stride with 'The Yes Album' so in some ways the timelines don't match up.

I find Yes is kind of in between. Not as tough as Magma or GG or even some KC. And I don't find them as emotionally resonant as Floyd. For those who do, great. But I can only enjoy them in a kind of detached, distant way with a few exceptions like South Side.

Floyd strong albums-Obscured by cloud, Animals
Yes strong albums-Fragile, Yes album, Close to the edge Yes wins

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Funnily enough I felt very much like this for a long time until I saw Yes play live about 1996. Then it just clicked into place. Floyd are a more emotionally involving band no doubt and I loved seeing Waters doing the Wall live on my 50th birthday.Trouble with Floyd from my perspective is that so much centres on just 4 albums while Yes have a whole string of albums at least up until 90125 that I love and also a few after that like Talk and Keys. I can also happily spend a whole evening watching the Yes Symphonic DVD. 3 hours of great music, who else has that??! ( and that is even without most of GFTO and Drama)

I think for a lot of people - Yes is a little like Rush - musically it's great but the high pitched vocals get to you after a while.
I may be speaking for just my self ...

I don't think so at all... speaking for yourself... it does seem to a large turnoff for some. Musically you can't touch them.. but if one is really to NOT get into them.. I think it mainly has to do with Jon Anderson. His singing as well as the throw sh*t at the wall lyrics he is famous for.. this word sound good..even better this meaningless string of words... let me put them in the lyrics. I have zero problem with it, even prog lyrics that do make sense.. make no sense to me.. or less impression. Obviously most don't have a problem with him, but if one does.. that is likely the only real fault one can find with them. They have a string of classics no one really can touch, that is why they are generally considered THE definative prog band. They covered all the bases and did so at such a high level for many many years. Edited by micky - January 14 2015 at 15:04 |

right thread...
oh come on now..as if Glimour over Howe wasn't bad enough.. Howe could (and did) play circles around Gilmour... but now this.. A 'great' vocalist. jesus luis... since when did being a great vocalist become merely being a good vocalist in a popular band. |
