pffff  LOLLOLLOL  do you really think people here care about respect of our fellow members

you are talking about the same forum in which Camel, a 2nd rate generic prog group, has beaten ELP.

TWICE!! LOLClap

A forum that is, has, and likely always will vote for 2nd class English language prog over 1st rate foreign language prog.

Seriously man... what respect is there left TO lose. Wink  A source of entertainment this place is, but definitely not the fountain of good solid objective thought.

Rush.

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

Unlike Rush, Gong has given us a musical family: Steve Hillage/System 7, Didier Malherbe, Mother Gong, New York Gong, Tim Blake, etc. etc. to name but a few, not to mention the wonderful jazz fusion that the band evolved into under Pierre Moerlen's leadership which drew in Mike Oldfield among other leading musicians.  Rush, on the other hand, from the early 80s continued to produce albums of increasing mediocrity.  There is simply no contest (especially on a prog forum).

^ Yep, the PA-pulation in general treats Rush as a top tier prog band, which it, quite frankly, is not. Despite all the good work they have done throughout the past 40 years.

Well judging by the amount of fanboys, polls and assorted threads having to do with Rush I've seen over the years, then they should be winning by a landslide.
Maybe they're all on holiday somewhere faaaaaaar away from Santa mania and all those mad people (mostly mothers I guess) who go absolutely ape-feces over important issues such as gravy thickness, ornamentations, gift wrapping paper, sweets and how the family will react to the cleanliness of the windowsWacko

Of course Rush is a top tier prog band.

Sales, longevity, influence - they qualify on all counts as top flight.

There are no true "prog" bands anymore....but Rush comes as close as any band right now. Most are crossover bands that are heavy into electronic, indie, alternative, rock........

They only disguise themselves as a second rate generic prog group.
Once you've classified them as that, then suddenly... BANG! you find out that you like them as much as the best prog groups, like ELP.
It may happen to you too, so be warned! WinkSmile

I'd agree with that.

To slightly re-phrase: the present day definition of prog is as vast as it's vague. Sometimes I feel it may be easier to define what's not prog Geek

OK, OK, a top tier it is.

Sales and Longevity: These are tell-tale hallmarks of prog since when?

(Hint: since Michael Jackson, Bee Gees, Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra and James Last orchestra Wacko)

Influence: I am not educated in this matter. Care to elucidate?

I'm discussing whether they are top tier, not whether they are prog.

It likely will.LOL  You've seen the mean age of the forumites here. Most haven't even likely had their first piece of ass yet or even been divorced yet LOL  LOL

Who do you think makes up the Rush army.. the Geddy is God.. or Peart is God kiddies Wink
As with most things that you say Micky, I take exception, however will gladly admit that Rush be the fountain of youth for some of us old guys.  I can't say that I see the appeal of a bunch of pixie potheads myself, but then again I've always taken pride in living a drug-free existence.
