The tournament system is always set to give the highest seeded ones the advantage, by pairing them with the lowest seeds in the initial round. Usually the big guys win, but if a band was "good" enough to make the tournament, anyone could plausibly beat any other "on any given Sunday" (am I using that expression correctly?)

Btw Micky - i'm in DC for a couple of days and if you know a good record or CD store I could visit, i'd appreciate any rece you have (yer from here, right?). I'm already planning on Crooked Beat, about a 2 mile walk from the Marriott.

If not, nvm

oh yeah. The CD cellars are great places, we do search and destroy missions there all  the time for rarities that people have ditched.

Now there is a place in DC were we go occasionally....

oh sh*t.  Raff just reminded me it closed down.  Lots of great things to have been found there.

here Steve.

http://www.cdcellarva.com/

both of them (the Falls Church store is the larger one) are generally within walking distance from Metro stops.

When are you going to be up here? Perhaps we can get together?

Doh. Sorry you're feeling poorly :(
Thanks for the link, i'll try to check it out. And if Raff is up to it, I'd be honored to make her acquaintance in your stead.
Feel better, mang.

Feeling Poorly?  Hah. I wish.  Today is the first day in a week I feel close to 100%.. good thing since my office decided to 'take it easy on me' on first day back to work this week and then proceeded put on top of a 16 story building in 30mph winds with biting cold with snow showers to troubleshoot some aircraft warning lights even when obviously not 100% and obviously (visibly) needing to still be in bed LOL

Yeah, that was a bad bug. One definitely going around it seems. Pretty much in bed from Sat to Wedns.  Days like today I have to remind me why I decided to drop out of college and leave a potential high paying safe warm cushy office job for a high paying dangerous frigid job LOL  Oh yeah...  because I love it!!  Plus you will never hear about a good electrician being laid off for corporate cut backs or downsizing.. a good highly educated electrician is worth their weight in gold and never out of work and still makes the big bucks haha.

Sorry we couldn't meet up with you Steve.  Definitely give us some lead time next time and hopefully we can get together.  Did you get a chance to check out the CD Cellars? Any other places?

Dateline: ROME!!!

Welcome back prog fans!  We are pleased to bring back the midweek Tournament Special. And today fresh from PA's suspension and then a bad bug we have everyone's favorite guest analyst...  Dick Micky!!!!!

PS:  So Dicky M  I understand you had a bit of the flu bug?
Dick:  yeah man. It was a real drag.  I'll say one thing about it though.  I got my first head rush from a cigarette in like 20 years this morning.
PS: Really
Dick: yeah my wife was really busting my ass about going outside to smoke when I was sick, and it probably wasn't the best thing to do so I hadn't had a cigarette in quite some time and when I fired one up this morning I felt like a kid again stealing pop's Winstons.
PS: hahah.  Yeah I remember doing that as well.
Dick:  Well I have wanted to really get on the ball about quiting so I'm really going to make a effort this time.
PS: That is nice Dick but as much as I know your fans adore you I reallly...
Dick: yeah... could give a sh*t.  So I suppose we should really get to what is important.  The Tournament!
PS: Indeed. Which we'll get to, and your thoughsts, after a word from our sponsors!!!

Dick:  man...  what a blast from the past. K-tel records.  I didn't know they were still around. M@X really must be digging for revenue streams.
PS:  It does pay the bills and keeps the site free for everyone.
Dick:  Yeah.. I suppose.
PS: So let's get on with the weekends action.  Shall we start in Lima.
Dick: Hah.  Way ahead of you, I found this great Peruvian place in Travestere.. my favorite part of Rome.. and man I got loaded on Pisco Sours.  The best thing to come out of Peru, next to my good friend Ivan of course haha
PS: Yeah Ivan is a hoot isn't he.
Dick: Yeah great guy. He got me my start in the business.  He was mentor of sorts. He taught me all I knew.
PS: Cool.  Though once I saw the blue font I knew to run for my life
Dick: No.. you knew to really run when the red font came to challenge the blue font.  My favorite was the 14 pages of arguing over an album's release date.
PS: LOL  I remember that. Classic PA's. So what are your thoughts on the Lima results with two days left in the voting.
Dick: Well much like Portland there really hasn't been a lot of drama.  The current results are pretty well set in all but two.  Traffic has a slight edge over Opeth and Renaissance has a slight edge over Weather Report. The rest are pretty much in the bag.
PS: Now Rome has..
Dick: oh yeah baby.. much like Detroit that had the more interesting matchups and has lived up to expectations.
PS: Shall we check in with those results
Dick: I haven't really checked them in a few days.
PS: During commerical break our crack research staff will check the current totals and we'll see where we stand
Dick: okey doke.

Dateline: ROME!!!

PS: So we are back. So Dick, what you think about the Rome bracket.
Dick: man.. what great matchups we had there.  DT getting smoked! Hawkwind and Magma all knotted up. Henry Cow up by only one vote on Sigur Ros. Uriah Heep having a slight edge on The Mars Volta. Procol Harem involved in a tight match with ...  that neo group.  Lots of close ones that will likely go down to the final hours and votes
PS:  Even better than Portland?
Dick: no way. Hawkwind-Magma is the one of real interest but Detroit had a potential major upset in play till the final closing and two that ended in ties.  Perhaps a couple end up in ties here but without the drama of major seed falling, no one thinks DT losing and getting trashed is really an upset, it likely is not as exciting.
PS:  True that.  So what are you looking for in Saturday's matchups.
Dick: oh definitely the bloodbath that will be Camel-ELP.
PS: hahah. Yeah that should be fun.. but will it be close
Dick:  My heart says yes, my head says no but we shall see!  PA's has matured over these last few years. Perhaps ELP has more respect today than they did years ago.
PS: You really think so?
Dick: NO LOL  Perhaps not matured as much as just lost a lot of the characters that gave it color and breath.
PS: perhaps but you never know.  So good to see you again Dicky M and hopefully we can track you down this weekend for your thoughts on the final results from the 1st round action from Lima and Rome
Dick: you got it dude!

A man of danger and intrigue.  Not to mention electricity.  I like that.
Hope you're continuing to recover.  Sounds like a badass bug you had.

I had only about 3 hours on Tuesday to roam free - I was afraid of something going wrong with my flight (I wasn't able to secure my seat online - sometimes they prefer to assign seats right at the gate, and I'd never come across that practice before), so I went to the airport very early.  Plus it was cold and rainy and that affected my ability and desire to go exploring outside (on foot).  I ended up walking 2 miles in the rain (buying a cheap umbrella at CVS that was so small that I should have kept it to stir my tropical drinks with) to this area on 18th Street that looked like the bohemian area of town and I had the most success at Smash Records, which is like a punk rock shop and they had some good CDs (I was a punk/hardcore fan prior to getting into prog).  Two other stores were almost exclusively vinyl, which would usually excite me but in this case I was just mindful of not buying anything that won't fit into my pocket.  So 3 CDs was just about the right size purchase and I was happy with that.

I'll try to check CD Cellar next time, and I'll try to let you know ahead of time the next time I go there.   I think I'm going to a conference in March or April, and I think it may be in DC.  I just can't find the email about it right now.

now that I've pumped some nicotine and caffine into my system. Time to get back to business.

30 minutes on the Lima bracket.  Vote now or forever be mocked for voting late (especially in close one haha)

What's the next bracket going to be? Amsterdam? Brussels?
Maybe some Arabian city, like Mekka, in support of Camel.

Cheers Steve. For the bitching I do about it, even today as we are scheduled to do a restaurant main service rewire tomorrow night, an allnighter in freezing temps, it is a job I love.  A good thing since the choice to do it, dropping out of college, cost me a marriage and my family.  Personal happiness is really the only thing one takes with them to the grave. Along with a few select CD's of course haha.

re: DC.  Oh yeah. We know Smash Records!  There is another one called the Red Onion we love. Yes, you were in the Adams Morgan area of DC. GREAT area, great small mom and pop album stores and lots of great eateries. There is a Cajun place there I make a bee-line for everytime we go there. It is one of the most trendy and lively of DC nightspots. Great area.

If you do make it back up here, hopefully on a weekend, do let us know and hopefully we can get together  this time.

lol.  Not a March madness fan I assume. The four host cities will stay as such until they each have winners. The site of the final 4 has not been announced (i.e. determined haha) yet.
